Subject: Intel CA810EAL video?

Hi
I just got a new server with an Intel CA810EAL motherboard. The
machine seems great so far but I am having trouble getting my X
configuration figured out for the on-board video adapter.
I am installing RedHat 6.2 and Xconfigurator makes it's suggestions,
which I take, but when I try to start X I get the msg "/dev/agp..." not
found.
Can anyone tell me a compatible card, etc. setting to use? The machine
will be a server and usually headless so I don't care if the display is
high-color and pretty, I just need 800x600x256 or better.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Slackware A, AP, and N disk sets,
plus Perl from disk set D, works fine on my 386DX33 with 8 MB ram.
The only hardware I added to it was a Linksys Ether16 10BaseT LAN card.
Works fine!

Subject: SB Live! doesn't work under Red Hat 7.0, Please Help
Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 22:14:44 -0500
I recently installed Red Hat Linux 7.0 on my computer. Like the title of
this post says, I can't get my SB Live! to work.
Here's what's going on. I tried using sndconfig, and it recognizes that I
have a SB Live!. But when it plays a sound sample, I can't hear anything.
No error messages, but no sound either. I tried telling sndconfig that I
had a regular SoundBlaster (thinking maybe there's some
reverse-compatibility in the hardware), but sndconfig dies with a
segmentation fault whenever I lie to it.
No matter what program I try to use, I can't get any sound. Particularly,
mpg123 and xmms are both silent. However, they both seem to *think* they're
playing music. I get no error messages or any other indication that
anything is wrong.
I made sure soundcore and emu10k1 are both loaded. The kernel was compiled
with sound support as a module. When I still had this problem on RH6.2, I
tried both the binary drivers from Creative's web site and the open source
drivers for emu10k1, and neither solved the problem. Again, everything
seemed to work fine (in that no errors whatsoever were reported), but no
sound was played too.
Yes, the speakers are plugged in, turned on, attached to the computer, etc.
The speakers and my SB Live! work perfectly under both Windows 98 and
Windows 2000 (I triple-boot my machine), so I seriously doubt it's some sort
of hardware problem. But I guess I had to say this, in case someone things
I'm *that* clueless about computers. <g>
But seriously, I have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it. I even
managed to stump the Linux Users' Group I'm in, so it must be something
bizarre or erudite. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the
problem? Even a look in the Sound HOWTO didn't turn up anything, since all
the troubleshooting and FAQs deal with handling error messages.
Thanks to whoever mananges to solve this. It's a pain not being able to
listen to music when I'm booted into Linux. In fact, it's one of the major
reasons I run Win2K most of the time.

Strange...
I have a Sound Blaster Live! Platinum, and it works great under RH 7.0. I
am not sure if it matters, but what version of the Live! card do you have? I
know there were different models in the value version but am not sure about
others. Also, you may have a IRQ conflict or something of that nature.
Maybe try to manually set up the IRQs in your system..

Subject: ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro Help with GATOS
Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 20:36:10 -0700
Howdy,
I have an ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro with 32 megs of RAM and I'm
having a spot of trouble. I installed Red Hat 6.2 and X without any
trouble. I'm trying to get the TV tuner to work. I installed GATOS
(with the ibtos, or something like that). But when I run it I get an
error like "xatitv: gatos_init(): No such device." I read the GATOS faq
and some usenet posts, so I'm getting the idea that GATOS works fine
with the 16 meg card but not the 32 (because the 32 uses the Rage
Theatre chip?). Is that right? But I've seen posts by people where they
mention in passing that they are using the TV tuner on their AIW 128
Pro 32s. So any idea on how to get it to work? Will bttv do the trick?
Thanks,
Achal

My system has an 810. If yours is set up like mine then you need
to have/compile the kernel module agpart.o. The device in
XF86Config is:
===
...
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel 810"
VendorName "Intel"
BoardName "810"
# 5-11-00 try adding power saving option
Option "power_saver"
VideoRam 4096
EndSection
...
===
The 3.3.x server is XF86_SVGA

I'm not certain what is technicaly a bootable partition. I've even
read of logical partitions being bootable. My two small drives have
one primary partition and inlude DOS. The 500M drive has DOS 6.2, but
I have never attempted to boot from it. I bought it used and only
used it as a slave drive. It should boot if connected to ide0.
The IBM drive has 3 primary partitions, each with an OS installed
(except the FAT32 patition that was formatted a WIN98 emergency boot
disk). When the IBM disk was installed as master on the second ide
channel, I expected LILO to be able to boot its DOS partition.
What surprised me was that with the IBM drive on ide0 and booting from
the DOS partition, DOS was unable to see the second logical partition
on the same drive which I had formated FAT16. Perhaps DOS 6.22 cannot
see beyond the first two partitons on a disk? If so, do OpenDOS
(DR-DOS) and FreeDOS share these limitations?
Multiboot managers do some strange things like dynamicaly altering the
MBR and\or partitition tables, hiding some partitions and making one
active while deactivating others. Boot Magic seems to needlessly hide
some partitions, but it can boot some partitions that LILO does not.
I like the ease of use and handy printed manual, but it looks like
I'll have to go back to using LILO.

more likey, I do something stupid to it.

Thanks. Tthat;'s what I had planned to do. I'm not sure about System
Commander. I did want to try OpenDOS. I was thinking that I could
install that into the old 500M drive, or even move Linux to the
extended partition, freeing up the third primary partition on the IBM
drive. It's probably not worth the trouble.
>You can recover your current Linux system, but it may be a bit of a

Thanks. I forgot about LOADLIN. It won't hurt me to go a few days
with out Linux. I just wanted to let you know that my Linux was not
readily operational, in case you suggested a magical Linux
incantation, and that the Linux boot disk is not as robust as it could
be.

IGIIW $39.99. Is this available at brick and mortar stores where
other QUE books are sold, or do I have to order it on line?
One final question. I'd be interested in a low or modestly priced PCI
sound cound with suitable drivers for both SMP Linux, and WIN3.1.

I'm not entirely sure, since the SB Live! came preinstalled when I bought my
system, and I don't have access right now to any printed materials that may
have (probably did not) come with the system. Anyway, this is what Win2K's
Device Manager says:
Creative SB Live! Value (WDM)
Input/Output Range: DF80 - DF9F
Interrupt Request: 9
For what it's worth, the version numbers of the drivers for the SB Live!
seem to be mainly 4.06, 4.10, or 5.0 (depending on the particular file).
Maybe that will give some indication of the version, although since I bought
the system three months ago, I wouldn't think an obsolete version would be
the problem... maybe too new a version?
When I tried sndconfig, it never gave me any options for IRQs or anything if
I selected the SB Live! option. Maybe some manual tweaking of the config
files is in order?

Well, I stuck a couple of P3/800s into mine. Doesn't even boot. I have a fairly
recent version (3.0). New voltage regulator. It seems, jumper positions are
irrelevant (P3s are locked anytway). Whatever I set them to, works the same with
the old P3/450s. Ok, I'll give it one more chance with a BIOS upgrade.

No, it's the other way around. You are just not consistent: you said above that
/dev/ttyS3 configured with the same IRQ as /dev/ttyS1 will not work, even though
/dev/ttyS1 is unused (i.e., not generating interrupts). You then suggested
disabling the second serial port in the BIOS which is clearly not needed.
