Subject: Re: ATA/100 drives with Linux
Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2000 15:02:33 GMT
OK. Lets see...My motherboard is an ABIT KT7 that supports ATA/100 but only
on the RAID channels, in order to get it to work you have to plug the drive
into the primary RAID channed (IDE3 on mine) and then set up the boot
sequence to boot from the RAID controller. It won't use the RAID functions
but it will allow you to use the drive at its full speed. Of course if you
had two or more of the drives you could set them up as true RAID devices
which would make full use of the system.
The only IDE controllers I know of at the moment that support ATA/100 are
RAID controllers. I haven't seen any normal ones yet, there may be a reason
for that but if so I'm not enough of a hardware buff to know it.
I don't think the comment about the cylinders applies anymore. My drive is
partitioned into two 10Gb partitions with Linux on the second one and I've
never had a problem. Although I have to admit I'm not entirely sure how many
cylinders that amounts to. I'll have to check.
In short, an ATA/100 drive won't cause you any significant headaches and
even if you can't get it to work at full speed all is not lost because you
can still run it as a UDMA66 device (not as speedy but still pretty good).

Don't know about RH7 but Mandrake 7.1 seems to support the Highpoint
controller straight from the box. I'm currently working myself up to trying
to get my ATA/100 drive running at full speed by putting it on the Highpoint
controller. I've managed to boot Linux from the Highpoint controller before
but I had some of the settings wrong and it all went a little pear shaped.
When I have the courage I'll try again (probably this weekend).

You don't need any hub.
Two 100 Mbit NICs, one crossover Cat 5 cable. You deal is likely to make it up
on the spot.
I had two machines wired that way for years, with more computers on coax cable
and cobo NICs (still no hub - the coax daisy-chains).
Now I have three machines on 100 Mbits; I got a Kingmax 4 port 100 Mbit (does NOT do
10 Mbit) hub. It's cheap, does the job.
If you want to go Internetting with both machines, do it from Linux;-)
Read up on ipchains - the docs with the package are probably enough.
Load up all the masq modules so ftp etc go through transparently.
Run squid to cache HTTP. Maybe run BIND as well (caches DNS lookups).

There are no drivers specifically for Red Hat; the same drivers apply
across all free Unix.

This printer will probably work with the final 4.0 release of the
gimp-print/stp driver. 777 support isn't actually in there yet, but
it's on the short list of stuff to go in before the end of beta. In
the meantime it may work servicably with one of the other epson
drivers in the betas.

I have been using the smc7004br since it came out and not had any

No hub needed the smc7004br has 4 10/100 ports for the lan side and a 10 meg
port for the wan side. If you are going to be using more than four machines
from this equipment then the hubs come into play.

I currently use a cable modem connection from at&t @home. I do have a
static ip. But set up the smc7004br to use dhcp to get info on wan side.
On the lan side I use dhcp also. No more thinking .

Hello,
Extreme linux newbie here....I have an ASUS K7V w/ Promise ATA100. I
want to learn linux but i can't install Mandrake or SuSE on my machine due
to them not seeing the drive at install on the ATA100. I also have FreeBSD
which I actually found a page that had a patch (typed) to get BSD to
recognize the drive. I unfortunately don't have the expertise it would take
to figure out how to apply the patch. I have check mandrakes site, they say
it wont work under 7.1 but may under thier "Cooker". SuSE's site does
reference the trouble but kind of blows it off as probably being a BIOS
issue and to update to the newest BIOS. I have updated the Award BIOS to
1004a but SuSE still doesn't see it. I have found one page that had a
mini-how-to that told how to get linux to work with UDMA33 & UDMA66 (kind
of) but I don't know enough about linux to figure out how to apply that to
the ATA100. And since I can't get linux installed, I'm not sure how I will
get that knowledge. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks!!

An interesting thing I noticed about the PERR bit being set on the
host bridge - it seems to get set during IDE hard drive access. If I
write the contents host bridge Status register to itself, it stays
unset until there is a large hard drive access. Is it possible that a
bad hard drive could cause this data to be written incorrectly onto
the PCI bus by the IDE controller and this is recognized by the host
bridge?
The Adaptec card OTOH, sets PERR after a couple of seconds regardless
of hard drive access. Presumably, something is writing to the card at
a regular interval. Is this normal, bearing in mind that the scsi
driver is not inserted? If not is it possible some other device is
mistakenly writing to the card?
Also, when inserting the aic7xxx module with extra negotiation
debugging messages enabled, it reports:
(scsi0) LVD/Primary Low byte termination Enabled
(scsi0) LVD/Primary High byte termination Enabled
(scsi0) Secondary Low byte termination Enabled
No mention of termination on the SE high byte is made, even when
explicitly requesting it as a module parameter. The 29160N does not
support wide SE devices, so this might be OK, but who knows?
Next, there is a jumper on the card labeled LVD-TRM or something
similar. This jumper does not seem to be documented anywhere. Dare I
try connecting it?
The SCSISelect BIOS has an unchangeable menu option described as "SE
termination level", set to 1. This is also undocumented. Could it
relate the the mystery jumper?
Lastly, I probably should have mentioned this before, but after
detecting all the relevant devices, the SCSI BIOS gives the error
"SCSI BIOS Not Installed!". What is this supposed to signify? Surely,
the SCSI card's BIOS exists since it gives the error. I wondered if it
might mean a motherboard BIOS with SCSI support, but my motherboard
BIOS claims to support booting from SCSI devices and so on.
Oh yeah, before anyone asks the SCSI card came with the latest BIOS
(2.57.2 IIRC).
Anyone got any suggestions ... or care to answer any of my questions
... please ...
