What to do of the old machine?
First possibility is to leave it on network,
act as a firewall or other.
Then heard about Linux clustering.
Beowulf doesnt seem easy, but what about Mosix? No need to recompile

Somebody knows about so small clusters?

You need to have "eject" installed - Red Hat has a package
"eject-2.0.2-6.i386.rpm". Look in /etc/fstab to see where
your zip drive is. If it's /dev/hdc4, for example, type
"eject /dev/hdc4".

YMMV, but I have a WDC 8.4 GB 5400 RPM drive that has shown me a maximum
DTR of 13 MB/s and an IBM 20.5 GB 7200 RPM drive that has shown me a maximum
DTR of 22 MB/s. Both are IDE and running in ATA/33 mode. The performance
difference was noticeable when I switched from one to the other as my main
drive.
SCSI would be nice, but it's not always in people's budgets :-)

Subject: hdparm option X
Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 09:46:41 -0400
My understanding of hdparm is that the X controls the transfer mode of a
harddrive. Using X34 I could set my harddrive to use UDMA/33 Transfers.
So I try it on my hard drives.
/dev/hda:
Model=QUANTUM FIREBALL EX6.4A, FwRev=A0A.0D00, SerialNo=676901955055

tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: mword0 mword1 mword2
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
UDMA modes: mode0 mode1 *mode2
hdparm -d1 -m16 -c3 -u1 -X34 /dev/hda Locks it up tight as a drum. Yet
looking at the info it says it supports DMA? What is the DblWordIO,
I believe that has to do with Double Word Transfers? Is that similar to
the Dual FIFO you often see for the Hard drive controller information
under Win9x? I'm missing some fundamental concept here that might tie
together -d1 and -X34.
Recommendations of harddrives that will support DblWordIO and can do the
X34, X66 or whatever? I'll be purchasing a new drive soon for a
440BX based board, so UDMA/33 is Max Capability , what can I get that
will work optimally?
Thanks,
Brian E. Seppanen

Hello all,
I have 15" MAG monitor and I wish to calibrate it's color output.
Unfortunately this monitor does not have external controls to adjust
color. But I did locate the three potentiometers inside the monitor that
control RGB. Is there a simple software that would allow me to tweak
these pots while providing some kind of visual feedback?
In the windoz environment, packages like Photoshop allow the color
profile to be adjusted - but this new colour profile works only under
Windoz. But I'm a big GIMP fan and would like to get into hobby-level
editing of digital photos.
Any pointers would be MUCH appreciated.

Jeremy - Maybe it was more luck than knowledge, but this worked for me. Do as
you did under netconfig - set your eth0 to DHCP and select boot at start up.
Then go to /etc and add to your profile file DHCP_HOSTNAME=cxxxxxxxx - the id
number your cable set up gives you. Add to export just DHCP_HOSTNAME to
export it out. Then go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and find ifcfg-eth0
file and add the line DHCP_HOSTNAME=cxxxxxxx - your id number again. Reboot
and that was all I did to have the DHCP working for me RH 7.0- on my laptop
with pcmcia ethernet card. Hang in there -- Jim

Subject: ide/dma: Spurious and lost interrupts
Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 17:23:34 +0200
Hi!
I got some problems with the new Maxtor 80GB harddisk.
It is installed in a system with an Asus XP55T2P4 board
and Linux 2.4-test9. (test7 has the same problem).
The Chipset does not support udma, but multiword 2 dma.
This are the error messages:
Oct 8 12:25:59 titiwu kernel: hda: timeout waiting for DMA
Oct 8 12:25:59 titiwu kernel: ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func
only: 14

Oct 8 12:29:55 titiwu kernel: hda: irq timeout: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete
DataRequest }
The "spurious interrupt"-message appears only after the first timeout msg.
But there is no device on IRQ7.
Sometimes these messages are followed by a reset for ide0, what is really a bad thing,
because the disk is > 32 GB and jumpered as 32GB. Only EZ-Bios can disable the
effect of this jumper. (Hmm... why not linux?)
It seems, that these messages appear if two processes are accessing
the disk at the same time.
Where is the problem?
Is it a defect in the Maxtor hard disk? My IBM disks did never had such problems.
Is it a problem of my Motherboard/Chipset (430HX)?
Is it a bug in the Linux kernel, or a kernel configuration problem?
The kernel reports the following while booting:
Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.31

Somewhere I read the hint, that the option -u 1 for hdparm
may fix the problem. But the man page says, that unmasking
irqs may result in filesystem corruption.
If the -u1 option is ok, why does it correct the problem?
Please help. Running the disk without dma is really
Thanks in advance,

I have a PC set up with Definitive Linux 7.0 which uses three IDE hard
disks.
I have recently purhased a Mentor MP810C SCSI interface and two hard disks.
Could someone tell me how to add these devices to the system. Presumably I
need to add drivers and the like. I tried re-running the installer which
found the SCSI adaptor, but couldn't then find the installation of Linux to
upgrade (possibly because I boot from a floppy disk).
I'm a bit of a LINUX newcomer with regards to setting a system up so any
help on this would be appreciated.
Regards.
