Hey guys, thanks for all the help. But it is STILL not working. Now, I am
either a complete idiot or tremendously unlucky. I went into netconf and
set everything to blank except kernel module and net device.
kernel module = 3c509
net device = eth0
of course
Then I tried rebooting. During the initialization, I got to "booting up
eth0" and then it hung for a while. Then I got the error again, unable to
setup eth0 via dhcpcd..failed. But this time, the PC light on the cable
modem actually turned on and the data light was blinking.
Then when I was logged in, as root, I typed "pump -i eth0" and then the PC
light came on again, it hung for a while, then it said "operation failed"
and the light went off. I even tried typing "dhcpcd -r" and the same thing
happened. The light goes on then off. Please don't hate me for bothering
you guys but I really wish to learn Linux. But I can't when some things
don't work. BTW, the ethernet isn't the only thing working. But I'm taking
it step by step.
thanks again

James, when I first set up both RedHat and Mandrake Linux, I had the same
problem. I have never successfully gotten the system to use DHCP on the
first go round.
The workaround I found was to let it fail on startup, then use dhcpcd to
connect. I used the command
"dhcpcd -h cc#######-a eth0" where the "cc#######-a" is the hostname the
techs gave you when they set up your machine. This command connected and
grabbed all the info it needed from the ISP.
Since this command ended up working for me, I just added to the end of the
init file so it executes after the other pertinent stuff does.

Have you tried it without dhcp? I've got my @home connection working with my
settings as follows: (I've got kernel 2.2.17-21 installed)
under adapter 1
Enabled (selected)
Config mode Manual (selected)
Net device - eth0
Kernal module - tulip (my cards chip sett)
also make sure the network selection is selected in the startup services
section of DrakConf, this seems to be easily reset wihen rpms are installed
that look to this section

I had exactly the same prob with mandrake 7.1
what I did was just to statically assign an IP address to eth0
and then once it had booted run "dhclient eth0"
and that did the trick

Hi All,
I'm trying to configure my RH 7.0 system to use my AOpen AW200 sound
card. The AOpen web site mentions that 4front and alsa have support for
the card, but as of yet I haven't been able to make it work.
The card docs say it's compatible with SB Pro and Windows Sound
System, but I haven't been able to make it work that way either. Does
anyone out there have any ideas?
Thanx!

If I'm not mistaken, the Dell L Series desktops use the
Intel i810 chipset with its built-in graphics capabilities.
Search this newsgroup on Deja.com (or whatever you like) to
look for detailed instructions for dealing with the i810.
Info (and drivers, I believe) are available somewhere on
Intel's website.

There should be a computer name they give you, like cxxxxxxx-c to identify you
machine. Did they give you a work order? See if you can find something that looks
like HST: cxxxxxxxx-c - On my @homw work order it was down at the bottom where
they list your CIP and NET: info. Just call them up at 888-262-6300 and ask for
it. Do you have an CIP number? In a terminal you could type nslookup <your
IP-address> and it should spit it out for you. Jim

Subject: Add SCSI support RH 6.2
Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 19:21:39 GMT
hi there,
recently, i tried to setup up my cdrw drive to my rh 6.2 system.
After doing some brief research, it led to a point that i should have
scsi emulation in order to setup my ide cdrw drive. well, no, i don't
have a scsi card in my computer and i am not sure whether i have setup
a scsi card support while installation. i do have scd* nodes in my /dev
directory. does it mean that i have scsi support installed already?
however, while i typed the command cdrecord -scanbus, it complaint that
it couldn't open the scsi bus as, of course, i was a root user. that's
why i am a little bit confused about the have/have not scis support
situation. ok, if it determines that i don't have it,
1) how can i add back the scsi support? is it possible which i
don't have a scsi card?
2) if it's a long process, please give me some online doc resource
which is enough for me go through the whole process.
ps: there is a scsi-howto but it's written in 1996. it is
update enough to guide me solve the problem?
peace :)

My experience with SCSI is that most problems are found in the
cables. Check that they are well-seated and without bent or
broken pins. The next most frequent problem area is
termination. Make sure both ends of the SCSI bus are properly
terminated. IIRC, the 1540 does not support active termination,
so if you don't have any external devices, make sure the
terminating resistor packs are installed or you have a terminator
block on the external connector. Check that the last internal
device has termination set. If you still have problems,
disconnect the devices and check them independently (one at a
time, being careful to set termination) to see if a device is
having problems. If after all that it still doesn't work, you
may have a bad card.
