I have Mandrake 7.0 and just installed one of these cards. Lothar
can't detect mine either, but it works. Here's what you do:
1) Get this file:
ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdriver-2.0-3.src.rpm
2) As root (login as root, or use "su"), install the file:
rpm -i netdriver-2.0-3.src.rpm
3) Go to the /usr/src/RPM directory
cd /usr/src/RPM
4) Type this:
rpm -bb SPECS/netdriver.spec
5) Next, type this:
rpm -i --force RPMS/i386/netdriver-2.0-*.i386.rpm
6) Next you either reboot (if you're new to Linux) or type "depmod -a" and then
"modprobe tulip". Either way, the card should be auto-detected next time you
boot the computer.

By which he means an external one, since as I assume we all know, there

So the scoop on low-budget multifunctions is this:
- Some HP devices now more or less scan, I think.
- One or more Epson devices may also work.
- The devices, in general, are pretty mediocre.
As another poster said, you may be better off buying two or three
different things and have the added flexibility and capabilities that
will bring; especially for Linux use, where our choices are so
limited.
I'll be speaking at the Multifunction Periperal Association's annual
conference here in Boston in two weeks. Anyone can see the
presentation I will be giving; feel free to comment or make

Indeed there is trouble.
I only got that particular error after an install ( one of
many attempts ) crapped out at the Lilo stage.
My setup is an 815E M/B with a 30G Maxtor IDE drive and
a Matrox G400 32MB AGP video board.
It also doesn't like:
RH6.2
RH6.0
SuSe6.1
Slakware 4.0
Caldera ( forgot the release )
Debian ( from the Linuxcare Bizcard CD )
In short it does not like Linux AT ALL!
I putzed about with the BIOS.
I've selected less video RAM than I've got ( 16 instead of
32 ).
I've played with partitioning.
And its not just one of the boxes. I've had at 3 of them so
far to no avail.
Failures are many and varied the most annoying being when it
croaks/hangs/reboots near the end of package installation.
It matters not whether I install graphically or in text mode.
The damned machine won't install Linux.
Mind you it will install Windoze 2K but thats beside the point
other than telling me the components are more or less working.
This particular board is giving me severe heartburn and I have
some 20 of the things to deal with. Now it may in fact be
something unrelated to the board per se like the X server but
I'm leaning toward the board itself as the culprit.
What's really annoying is that I didn't get to spec the boxes
and the motherboard was chosen on the recommendation of a
Windoze junkie.
And, while I'm venting, how about RedHat. H/W Compatibility
Lists inaccessible since at least last Friday and forget
about writing up a trouble ticket from their website. Now
I'm prepared to make allowances for the crap storm resulting
from the RH7.0 release but somebody screwed up major league
fashion in their support department. Needless to say this
is going to color my view of their product.
I'm also not terribly happy about the problems I had trying
get RH6.2 to install and run on a dual CPU (733MHZ) gift
horse I received last week. Finally gave up and tried a
copy of Mandrake 7.1 I brought from home. Surprise, surprise
it now works ike a charm. Unfortunately now I have to install
Windoze 2K on hda and isn't that going to be fun.
There, I feel much better now.
Some of you are no doubt asking why hasn't he tried RH7
which is fair enough. Lets just say I am captive of a
procurement process which can only be described as severely
disfunctional.

Subject: grabbing AVI w/sound from an old Hauppauge and SBLive?
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 07:17:44 +0200
Has anyone succeeded capturing avi files with sound (mono) with an
old'ish mono Hauppauge WinTV/PCI (801?) and a SBLIve 1024?
Been trying to use xawtv's inbuilt avi capture feature, and also
"streamer", without any success:
Every time i try to capture with sound, the app becomes inresponsive to
further input and has to be killed.
The avi-file will grow and grow untill app is killed, and aborting it
all of course corrupts the file.
-Recording avi-files from xawtv or streamer *without* sound works just fine.
-Recording sound from xawtv with Gnome Sound Recorder works works just
fine as well. (Using "line" as device.)
I have tried everything that can possibly be recorded from of devices,
via both kmix and gmix, to see if that could be the error, but no go -
it freezes regardless.
Both sound and image keeps on running OK, but the app becomes
unresposive to keyboard input, so i can't terminate the recording.
the mixer in ~/.xawtv is:
mixer = line
Version of xawtv currently 3.21, but had the problem in 3.18 as well.
System: RH6.2 with all upgrades, ps/2 logitech scrollwheel, an external
modem, a Viper v500 PCI in an ASUS P2B-F. No radio, no lirc. Keyboard is
a ps/2 logitech thing set up as a normal 102 key keyboard.
Is it a PCI related problem, or a known problem with old bttv and emu10k1?
Or rather..Is the some sneaky workaround for lazy grabbers with
module-angst?

I've tried the SourceForge version of the driver under 2.2.17 and
2.4.0-test9. In both cases, it worked fine when running without X, but
the computer locked up totally while I was resizing a window under X.
I'm running X 4.01 with a Voodoo Banshee, on an AMD K6-III.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I cannot initiate a the X Server. I don't know why. Can you help me.
I think I need the higher version of X86Free. Perhaps 4.0.1.

Been here, done that, except mine's a SMART-UPS 1000. Look around on
http://www.exploits.org/ for something called NUT (Network UPS Tools),
one of the links has a JPEG of the so-called "smart" cable diagram.
Aha, here's the link---
http://www.exploits.org/nut/library/940-0024C.jpg
Built two different cables and my UPS is working great. Also a friend is
using another of my cables with Powerchute and the built-in UPS support
of Windows 2000 (also by APC) with the same cable.
Good luck!

I run RH6.2, and this is what i found was the easyest approach:
Add this in /etc/conf.modules
options ide-cd ignore=hdc
pre-install sg modprobe ide-scsi
pre-install ide-scsi modprobe ide-cd
(in the first like, let the device (here hdc) be the one that origially
was your own assigned IDE device)
Then, create (or add to) a file called rc.modules in /etc/rc.d/
modprobe -t scsi sg.o
modprobe -t block loop.o
modprobe -t scsi ide-scsi
do a chmod ugo+xr on it, as it is a script. This is in accordance with
the permission policy on the other files in /etc/rc.d/
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit looks for this file, and will load the modules
listed in it if it exists. (It doesn't exist by default on a clean RH6.2
install.)
The other "modules" you need are already in the kernel.
If you do as above, and have linked /dev/cdrom to the correct device,
and edited /etc/fstab and afterwards ran /sbin/lilo, the next time you
boot the CD-R/W should be immediately accessible. And mountable, if you
intend to read CD's. THe only "oddity" i found was that when i preload
all modules, the gnome applet "cdplayer" will attempt to hold on to the
CD device, so in order to eject a data CD after unmounting, i have to
use the eject-button on cdplayer. No big deal. (Btw.. In case you use
gnome applets, remember to remove and add them again so they "see" the
new scsi device, or they'll think it's still the old IDE disk.)
I made a quick and dirty variant of the script to load and check modules
with (as listed in the CD-burner howto)
Requires cdrecorder installed.
Call it "drivertest", set access to u+x and run it as root from anywhere
with ./drivertest
Not flawless but it works. (it checks for a little too much, that's all,
but the paths weren't quite Redhat'ish in the original on web.
Do COMPARE it to the listing on web if you aren't sure what this does.
Never run strange stuff found in mailing lists before you know what it
does. You'll find that all i've modified is removing lines or adding paths.
test `whoami` = 'root' || echo "You must be root to execute the commands."
cdrecord -scanbus > /dev/null
if ! (/sbin/pidof kerneld || test -f "/proc/sys/kernel/modprobe"); then
echo "Neither kerneld nor kmod are running to automatically load
modules".
fi
report_no_autoload() {
echo "Ensure the module $1 is loaded automatically next time."
}
if test ! -f "/proc/scsi/scsi"; then
report_no_autoload scsi_mod && /sbin/insmod scsi_mod
fi
if ! grep "^........ sg_" /proc/ksyms > /dev/null; then
report_no_autoload sg && /sbin/insmod sg
fi
if ! grep "^........ sr_" /proc/ksyms > /dev/null; then
report_no_autoload sr_mod && /sbin/insmod sr_mod
fi
if ! grep "^........ loop_" /proc/ksyms > /dev/null; then
report_no_autoload loop && /sbin/insmod loop
fi
if ! grep iso9660 /proc/filesystems > /dev/null; then
report_no_autoload iso9660 && /sbin/insmod iso9660
fi
echo "The following is only needed for IDE/ATAPI CD-writers."
if ! grep ide-scsi /proc/ide/drivers > /dev/null; then
report_no_autoload ide-scsi && /sbin/insmod ide-scsi
fi
cdrecord -scanbus
Hope this helps.

I'm having great difficulties configuring Xwindows to even get proper vga16
on this video card. I've installed Mandrake 6.5. Also using an old Samsung

so, where do I find it, and what settings do I need in the config file for
sync values. I briefly had X up, but it was hanging off the bottom of the
