Hi,
since upgrading from kernel 2.2.xx to 2.4.0-test9=20
I don't get sound working while looking TV. It worked
fine before. Do anyone have an idea?
It doesn't work neither if I link all modules statically=20
into the kernel nor if loaded dynamically by modutils.
My system: Hauppauge WinTV/Radio /w BTTV878, Philips
PAL, Philips Tuner, MSP3400; Athlon 800; SB Live! Value;
Geforce 2 GTS; 512 MB; Kernel 2.4.0-Test9; OSS 3.9.3r

Hi,
is the Silicon Motion Lynx3DM graphics card supported by
Linux? (This is a notebook graphics card with 8MByte.)
I use the Suse 7.0 Linux distribution. The configuration tools for graphics
which are included in that distribution didn't work (sax, sax2 and
xf86config).
Can somebody help me how to configure X?
Thanks...

Subject: IDE hardware Raid 5 & Linux?
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 13:57:19 GMT
I've heard there are some IDE cards available with *hardware* Raid 5.
Anyone know anything about these (recommendations?), and if they're
compatible with Linux?
I have an MP3 player that's almost out of disk space (60GB). I'm planning
on buying 4x 80GB drives and setting them up in Raid 5. With a hardware
Raid 5 controller, I *should* be able to boot off the disk array, right?
Thanks,
js.

Hello folks,
my question concerns linux kernel support (2.2.16) for the rather cheap
ide raid controller cards like Promise Fastrak 100 pro and Abit Hot Rod
100 Pro.
As far as I know there are some vendor beta drivers around but I would
prefer a kernel patch. So I had a look at
http://www.linux-ide.org/chipsets.html.
According to this list seems to be no support for hardware raid with the
above controllers.
Is this correct ???
Does anyone have experience with linux ide raid ?
Thanks, Philipp.

Can't help with the problem but I am seeing the same behavior without
a Zip drive attached to the same aic7xxx chipset. Mine is on my motherboard
though. I had a 400 meg HP disk drive on the bus but removed it due to the
timeouts killing me. If you find out what to do please let me know.

I believe Adaptec is the only manufacturer of hardware RAID controllers.
Sorry, only know SCSI RAIDs (and those seem to work with Linux great).

Do you have faulty memory?
Some segfaults appear with faulty memory, overclocked cpu's...
Check your memory.
Have you tried getting a different version of the gcc? Have you visited

Correct again. Although they recomend to set it up as "/dev/hdc" . I mount
it on /mnt/ls120, but you can use any point that you like.

Well, this depends on whether you have the CDROM as the master unit in the
secondary channel and the LS120 as the slave unit in the secondary channel.
You know,
master, primary channel: /dev/hda
slave, primary channel: /dev/hdb
master, secondary channel: /dev/hdc
slave, secondary channel: /dev/hdd

I am running Redhat 6.1. This workstation when it was a windows
machine printed just fine. Even now when I boot it from a DOS
diskette I can print. However the printer does not seem to respond in
Linux. I have the hardware set (in BIOS) to IRQ 7 Port: 3BCH and I
have tried Port 278H as well.
The printer does reset when I restart the computer. And I am sure the
hardware is working alright. When I go to do something simple like:
ls > /dev/lp0
I get no such device. I have repeated this startement with lp1, and
lp2 On my other linux box (also 6.1 but different hardware) it
works fine.
Can someone give me a suggestion on places to look to fix this?

Newer kernels often have everything compiled with at least P5 optimizations
enabled. They run well on newer machines, but not so well on older ones.
One option would be to grab a Linux distro from a few years back. It might
not have the latest and greatest on it, but it'll run faster.
The other option would be to roll your own system (with LFS or a similar
guide) and compile everything with the appropriate optimization for your
system. I recently did this for my firewall system, which uses a Cyrix
5x86-120. Changing from SuSE 6.4 to a 486-optimized LFS speeded things up
considerably. (It freed up some disk space, too, and with only 120 megs to
play with, going from almost full (and no swap) to something around 30 megs
free (with some swap) makes a difference.
I'd give LFS a shot. It'll take longer to get up and running, but you'll
learn a lot in the process.

Subject: recompiling the kernel: how to find drivers
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 10:16:35 -0600
I recently acquired an old HP Vectra XU 5/90C. I did a basic RH 7 install
with only minor problems (at least I hope they're minor; I've described them
in a separate post). Now I'd like to recompile the kernel, but I don't know
exactly which drivers to use for various components. Can someone clue me in
on how to figure that out? Is their some log file or command to find out
which drivers Linux picked, or some other way to see exactly what my
hardware is?
Here's the configuration as far as I can see from the boot sequence:
HP Vectra XU
dual Pentium 90 CPUs
80 M RAM
SCSI controller (AMD PCscsi BIOS v2.0x11 it says at bootup)
sda is a 1G SCSI on id 0
sdb is a 2G SCSI on id 1
sr0 is a SCSI Sony Model CD-ROM CDU-76S on id 3
Video card: Matrox MGA Impression+
Ethernet is on the motherboard, "PCI Integrated Ethernet"
I guess there are three drivers I need to figure out.
1) the video card--I can probably find that one pretty easily
2) the SCSI controller--couldn't find something that looked like a
match, but obviously it's working so there must be one.
3) an ethernet driver--again it is working, so it must have found a
driver, but I don't know how to tell which it's using.
Thanks for your help.

Subject: problem during clean RH7 install
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 10:37:18 -0600
I'm installing RH7 on an old HP Vectra XU with dual Pentium 90 CPUs. The
install was fairly painless, but it hangs up when booting unless I boot in
uniprocessor mode ("linux up"). The default boot procedure hangs with this
message:
[...]
Trying to unmount old root ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 76k freed
[here it waits for a while, then:]
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 37, scsi0, channel 0, id1, lun

============================================================
At this point it is completely hung, and one drive light remains on.
A couple of questions/thoughts:
Since the problem only happens during a dual-cpu boot, does that indicate a
bug in the kernel? Or is it a SCSI problem? Maybe a hardware problem--the
hard drive? the SCSI controller? What steps can I take to narrow down the
problem? If I boot using the boot disk created during installation, then
this problem doesn't occur--but I think the disk boots in uniprocessor mode
by default (how can I tell?).
FYI, here's my hardware configuration:
HP Vectra XU
dual Pentium 90 CPUs
80 M RAM
AMD PCscsi BIOS v2.0x11
sda is a 1G SCSI on id 0
/boot on sda1 (16M)
swap on sda5 (983M) (yes, I know I don't need all that swap space, I'm
just playing around still)
sdb is a 2G SCSI on id 1
swap on sdb1 (176M)
/ on sdb2 (1870M)
Thanks for any comments, tips, advice.
