Hello Dennis,

Well, check this out:
linux:/cdrom/suse/xsrv3 # sax
SaX: searching card...done
SaX: MACH64 SUN24 server not installed
SaX: switching to VGA16 server
SaX: VGA16 server not installed abort
linux:/cdrom/suse/xsrv3 # rpm --install xsun.rpm xmach64.rpm --force
<they were already installed!>
linux:/cdrom/suse/xsrv3 # rpm --install xsun.rpm --force
linux:/cdrom/suse/xsrv3 # sax
SaX: searching card...done
SaX: MACH64 SUN24 server not installed
SaX: switching to VGA16 server
SaX: VGA16 server not installed abort
ARGH!! And where is the VGA16 server to be found on the CD? Does installing
it actually help? Why cant SaX find the installed server?!

Well, at first it looked cool. But, hmm... perhaps you are right! Is Debian
or RedHat better?
Kind regards,

was wondering if anyone has tried installing those new Maxtor 80GB
drives into their i386/linux box. Ive got one, but it's only
registering 4111 cylinders, so the most i can get out of it is about
33021576 blocks, which is about 33.8GB. hmm... whats wrong with this
picture? am i missing something? what happened to the other
40something GB?
-using fdisk, i create a primary (or extended) partition and fill it up
to 4111 cylinders (one big fat slice).
anyway.. if anyone has any insight to this situation, that would be
great!!!!

Specific instructions are available here:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-5.html#ss5.1
You will still have to install a patched Kernel to use DMA-100. Without it, DMA-33
will work OK.

"insmod 3c509" fails during bootup (RH 7.0) /mod/lib/... /insmod 3c509
.....[failed]
"insmod 3c509" ONLY works for me when logged in as root.
after "insmod 3c509" I go to the "Network Config" GUI utility and
"activate" the eth0
I set my Abit BH6 bios to treat IRQ5 as "legacy ISA"
I stared to get "unusual" activity in my 5.1 Gig W-D HDD and soon strange
shit started. After a while when logging in/out the video was gone. A
reinstalled 7.0 RH with "checking for bad sectors", so far so good. Perhaps
a bad software install caused this crapp?
I have not found a "Defrag" or "Scandisk" in Linux.
My NIC works ok, but this bothers me. My Aureal MX-300 card I have not been
able to get going despite valiant efforts ( drivers from
aureal.sourceforge.net) .
My USB mouse got squirrelly, USB-host problem. In my new install ( my 3rd) I
use it as a P/S2. The Epson 610 scanner in not responding.
The "filemanager" in Linux does not report directory sizes, only file sizes.
Windoze has more file utilities, making short-cuts et cetera.
This is not a happy experience....

To find the I/O address and interupt for your PCI modem, run (as root):
lspci -v
Find the section which refers to your modem.
Then use the "setserial" command to set up a serial diver for your modem.

There currently is a war of personality going on between Donald Becker(writer
of most of the network drivers including the tulip driver) and the core kernel
team. Do not expect this to get any better till 2.4 series, where the tulip
driver will be broken up a bit more.

I have a Diamond Speedstar A50 (8meg, AGP, SiS 6326) on a machine
running rh6.1 with XFree 3.3.6. Had problems with X until I modified the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file.In the "Device Section" I added option "no_accel"
and "no_bitblt". Depending on what video card you have this may work for
you. See http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS.html for more info.

I don't have any experience with tape drives on a windows system, but
you can do backups with the "dump" and "restore" commands or the "tar"
command under linux. Under the "Thats nice, but is it worth the money?"
catagory, there is BRU. It is the easy to install, easy to use GUI for
backups. See http://www.bru.com/ for more info on BRU. Use the "man"
command for more on dump, restore, and tar.

I have a Diamond Speedstar A50 (SiS 6326, 8 meg, AGP) working with Red Hat
6.1. I added options "no_accel" and "no_bitblt" to /etc/X11/XFConfig.
You may need different options with other cards and SiS 6326 chipsets.
See http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS.html for more options.

Subject: Voodoo2 boards not working with Redhat 7.0
Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 21:44:55 -0600
Has anyone had success with the Voodoo2 Reference Drivers and the Glide
Source Kits working with Redhat70 and a Voodoo2 board?
Will they work with XFree86 4.0.1 and the 2.2.16 kernel in Redhat7.0?
I downloaded Device3Dfx-2.3-5.src.rpm, Glide_V2-2.53-6.i386.rpm , and
Glide_SDK-2.2-14.i386.rpm from
http://linux.3dfx.com/open_source/download/voodoo2.htm and as root, did
exactly what the instructions said.
But when I did step 5,
rpm -Uvh RPM_PATH/RPMS/i386/Device3Dfx-2.3-4.i386.rpm
some strange things happened. I got a warning from rpm about modutils,
modules.conf, and conf.modules. I looked at the two files and found the
line, 'alias char-major-107 3dfx' in conf.modules, but no such entry in
modules.conf. I found the file 3dfx.o in '/lib/modules/2.4.0-26/misc/'
with a size of 7760 bytes. But I have a 2.2.16-22 kernel, and there was
no 3dfx.o in /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/ where I expected it. I checked
/dev and found a /dev/3dfx. 'ls -la /dev/3dfx' gives me:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 107, 0
Then I went on to step 6. and entered,
rpm -Uvh Glide_V2-2.53-6.i386.rpm,
which installed Glide_V2. I then ran /usr/local/glide/bin/test3Dfx,
testGlide2x and testGlide3x. They all printed to the console, and I got
a lot of CPU activity, but there was no blue screen. I ran lsmod and
there was no 3dfx module loaded. So then I copied 3dfx.o from
/lib/modules/2.4.0-26/misc/ to /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/ and 'alias
char-major-107 3dfx' from conf.modules to the end of modules.conf, and
ran the test programs again. Same results, no blue screen. Then I looked
in /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/modules.dep. There was no entry for 3dfx.o, so
I added one just after the entry for tdfx.o. I tried the tests again, no
results, no loaded module. Then I used insmod 3dfx to get the module
loaded. It gave me a warning about modutils reading from modules.conf
and ignoring conf.modules. I ran the test programs again and they didn't
work. lsmod gave me:
Module Size Used by
3dfx 4984 0
Not sure if I need to install Glide_SDK-2.2-14.i386.rpm
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Any suggestions?
Is something missing in modules.dep?
Will this device driver only work with a 2.4 kernel?
Was I suppose to install the Glide_V2-2.53-6.src.rpm found at
linux.3dfx.com/open_source/glide_kit.htm ?

Hello.
When attempting to boot Linux kernel v2.2.17 from a Compact Flash (CF) device I
am getting the errors shown below. This CF device is in a PCMCIA form factor
and is the Master device on the secondary IDE controller
Before we get to the errors, though, a little background. I can reproduce this

(non-booting) on a 3rd system. For both boot systems the CF device is the only
IDE device and is the Master on the secondary IDE controller (/dev/hdc). For
the non-booting system the device is in a PCMCIA slot (/dev/hde).
This is what I see at boot time:

the same drive_cmd messages when simply inserting the device in a PCMCIA slot
(that is, before attempting to mount any filesystem), I don't think that it is a
factor.
This is definately an OS issue. I've booted many OSes (DOS, Win95, VxWorks,
LynxOS) from this same configuration (CF = IDE1/Master as the sole IDE device)
and have seen no complaints like the ones shown above.
So... what can I do to work around this problem? Thank you.

XCDroast used to be the only option for making CDs in a graphical
environment. This is no longer the case--get something a little more
recent would be my advice, or just say the hell with the GUI. The
command line is more flexible for this sort of thing anyway....
To make an image, do
mkisofs -r -J -o image.iso /path/to/directory/tree/I/wanna/back/up
To burn that image onto a CD-R(W), do
cdrecord -v dev=X,Y,Z speed=W image.iso
You can also combine these commands with a pipe, to avoid having a
bloody huge temporary image file hanging around:
mkisofs -r -J /path/to/tree/ | cdrecord -v dev=X,Y,Z speed=W -
mkisofs accepts multiple paths, too, so you can back up two different
directory trees to a single ISO image like so:
mkisofs -r -J /path/my/home/ /path/elsewhere/
All that XCDroast, GNOME-Toaster, KreateCD, and the other GUI things do
is provide a front-end to mkisofs and cdrecord.

insmod only works for root, period! You don't want normal users being
able to load kernel modules. That's a security risk of the highest
order, since a kernel module can do whatever it darn well pleases with
the hardware.
Put the insmod command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local ? There are other ways of
accomplishing this, but that's sure to work automatically at bootup.
Manually configuring the card every boot with ifconfig should not be
needed; look in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ for the things you need
to edit.

RedHat's X.0 releases have not been known for their stability.

Search comp.os.linux.misc on http://deja.com/home_ps.shtml and find out
*WHY* there is no "defrag" for Linux. Or look in the FAQ--if it's not
in the FAQ, it should be, as that question erupts every 6 weeks or so
and causes lots of shouting back and forth. SCANDISK.EXE is
approximately equal to "fsck" and/or "badblocks". The man pages will
tell you more.

So change your filemanager. There are only about 20 of them available!
wrt "shortcuts" (Unix people call them "symbolic links"--Unix had
this capability long before DOS did), kfm, Konqueror, and gmc allow you
to right-click on an icon, drag it to somewhere else, and select "link"
from the menu that appears. Directory sizes are generally reported by
"du" via the command-line, but Konqueror allows you to right-click on a
directory and see a "Properties" dialog that's hideously similar to the
one in WinXX.
>This is not a happy experience....
Cheer up; at least you haven't zorched everything in /lib yet! (Do not
do that. It's not fun to clean up.) Or you could be watching a suite
of "Enterprise-Level" NT apps dribble and spew all over themselves
because file X can't be found, even though it exists and is perfectly
fine and has been copied to every directory where the suite could
possibly be looking for it, necessitating 1.5 hours with the install
media, wishing for some equivalent of strace so you could see what the
installer is puking on *this* time.
Just remember that All Software Sucks, and you should be fine. HTH,

Kernel versions < 2.2.14 could only handle IDE drives up to about 32G.
RedHat 6.1 shipped with 2.2.12-something. Upgrade your kernel; the
latest ones can theoretically handle IDE drives up to the maximum
defined IDE spec of 137.5G. (We should see those within 8 months; bets
on whether they'll hurriedly extend the IDE spec, or invent something
new/improved/brain-damaged?)
