last time I compiled my kernel i fell over "IP: kernel level
autoconfiguration",
in the Networking options menu. (Enable this to enable the following
options)
and then choose the option below that you need.
For further details you might want to tell us which protocol you wanna
use
(BOOTP, RARP, DHCP).

Subject: Monitor unwanted power-save

I'm in desperate need of help.
I've just installed SuSE 7.0 hoping to quickly pick up some Linux experience
before I have to use it in work. Installed okay except that choosing some
functions (e.g. choosing the screensaver setup from the configuration menu)
forces the monitor into power-save mode and nothing can wake it up again.
This forces me to reset the PC meaning file system checks etc etc (a pain).
I'm using an NVidia TNT2 Model 64. I've experimented with SaX2 but haven't
managed to fix it - the only thing I've done is somehow to screw up the
keyboard config so I have to type different keys to enter my password!
I'm going to download the latest drivers from NVidia, but whilst I'm trying
to work out how to install a driver in Linux (I'm a _complete_ newbie) I'd
appreciate any help you could give me.
TIA

I bought this kind of machine and it doesn't see any kind of HD

I can be more specific about the system.

I suspect you mean that you have to have a multi-threaded program that can run
on each processor. All you need is multiple programs of any variety running at
the same time to realize multiple processor benifits. For example, if I do a
build stream and while I'm doing the building, I'm reading news, etc., both the
compiler and the foreground processes will be spread over each of the cpus
automatically. For example, GCC might hog one processor while the other
process is doing foreground stuff. Obviously you have to have enough memory to
run the processes at the same time.

So I tried to set up vbox... Hmm I got it already running with an old suse

1 year ago and an AVM Fritz PCMCIA card- but now I cannot get vbox running
with SuSE 7.0...
The problem is, that the HiSax driver for my Teles 16.3PnP ISA got some
problems with vbox on Suse7.0.
I tried audio compression ADCPM-4 -> no audio on the telephone line. So I
tried ULAW since ALAW is not any more support (says the documentation).
With ULAW compression the audio is played but tooooo fast.... Is this a
problem with the teles driver and the suse kernel ??? What's wrong
Has anyone experience with teles 16.3cPnp, vbox and Suse7.0 ???

Slave DMA uses the System DMA controllers to transfer data. It's
theoretically twice as fast as PIO, but under real world conditions
the gain isn't all that much unless you tweak the drivers to give you
more throughput (IMNSHO, that's what happens with ATA's supposed "Bus
Mastering" drivers.) Real Bus Mastering uses 1st Party DMA, which
requires the Host Adapter to contain its own, high-speed DMA
controllers. It competes for control of the System Bus, bypassing the
System DMA controllers.
There are some drivers for the SCSI-AT and an ASPI driver for the
SPI300 on my website. http://www.aquascape.com/theref

Any ideas what this means and possibly how to clean this up?

I have recently set up an atapi ide zip drive. I have compiled in scsi

Prior to using the scsi emulation, I was using the floppy-ide driver

Since I have gone to scsi emulation, I have this message appearing

Theres no problem with the ISA bridge adapters which is what you will
need for the PCMCIA card .
The Linux PCMCIA card support simply picks up the Wavelan card as if
it were in a PCMCIA adapter.
Theres also no problem with talking directly with other WL cards
without an access point .
Its called ad hoc demo mode.
Ive only used the older 2 MB bronze cards so I dont have any
experiance with the newer ones , but the old cards work really well.

This fix wasn't too hard to find.
There is a routine in the nfs script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs that
checks for version 3 of nfs. Because I am running a version 2, for the
moment I have commented out the routine from running. mountd no
executes without an argument.

This is weird. I don't claim to be anywhere near an expert, but this is
all I did to get the Linksys card (4.1 version) working.
1) I made sure I had the kernal sources installed. I don't think they
are by default.
2) I followed the instruction exactly as Linksys had them in the
Linux/netdrivers instructions file.
3) I used gcc (2.96?) as installed by RH 7.0 (even though it may be
buggy).
I did get a slew of warnings as the drivers compiled. But both
pci-scan.o and tulip.o work just fine. Maybe I'm living on borrowed
time. Who knows?

As others have informed me, you need a version of modutils that is more
recent than the stock RH6.2 modutils to compile modules on a 2.4.0
kernel -- I think this is in the README or other notes for the kernel.
Try searching on www.deja.com/usenet for my postings on the subject and

My hardware vendor (who is generally pretty good) is questioning how
often ram really fails in a bit here or there. Are we seeing rare
occurances (once in a year) or is this a more serious issue ? In
particular, I can see why a commercial server would need ECC RAM but
is there a need for those of us not running a commercial server farm ?
What about running a ram testing program (www.simmtester.com I think)
that checks ram continuously for however long you want to go (leave it
run for a day or two to confirm all is well) ?
