We have had an easy time putting nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64 - based
PowerColor Sniper2 with 32 megs of SDRAM in many Red Hat,
Slackware, and Debian boxes. Same goes for ATI Rage 128
and Rage 128 Pro based cards.

We have installed many Realtek based 10/100 PCI NIC cards, and have
had no problems (under Red Hat, Debian, and Slackware). If one looks
around, these cards to for $12-$15 US. Great for home use.

Not a bad idea to look a GNU/Linux hardware vendors' web sites,
either. We build boxes and buy the hardware with Linux compatibility
in mind, and we offer complete lists of the parts which go into our
machines. I recommend you check and see what you can get from various
vendors after pricing parts yourself - you might be surprised.

What's your problem with understanding? 99% of PCI modems are
winmodems. 5% of those have a linux driver.

Bully for you. How does that affect the advice one should give to
people? Or do you propose crossing the road with your eyes shut simply
because 5% of the time you will survive?

My keyboard is Chicony KB-8993 and no, the multimedia keys are not
'active' they DO NOT generate any scancodes (showkey -s)! This is my
problem!
Once I can 'convince' the keyboard to generate scancodes I have a kernel
patch which can map them to different actions (based on the Rapid Access
Keyboard demon built for a similar IBM keyboard, www.surmount.com).
It all looks like the controller _in_ the keyboard (Chicony 6868A) needs a
special initialization sequence. I might be wrong here. This is of course
implemented for Windoz but I was wondering if somebody already did figure
out the Linux implementation.
Thanks for the input ayway!

Perhaps because if you over-simplify and say no PCI modems work and someone
hears elsewhere that in fact they (some) do work then they will be very confused
and may totally disregard your statement?

And what exactly is the penalty of that? They then have a 50% chance
(confused person) of going ahead and buying the non-working pci
winmodem, instead of the 95% chance which they'd have had if they went
ahead and bought a pci modem in the first place without receiving
advice, or the 0% chance that they'd have if they heeded advice to not
buy a pci (or USB!) modem.
Do you know ANY game theory, decsion theory, risk analysis? NNNO.
Telling them not to buy a pci modem is the optimal strategy against
the game countermoves you proposed.
And I suppose they aren't confused by being told that pci modems can work?

hi,
Trying to instal Suse 7.0 onto Proliant 1000.
No luck so far, because I did not succeed in loading SCSI module sim710
during
setup.
Hardware:
NCR 53c710 On Board, looked at the chips on the motherboard.
IRQ 15 I/O 8000 Derived from both Windows (settings) and from Compaq
Configuration Utility.
Tried to pass parameters during loading of module sim710 in various ways
0x8000
io=0x8000
0x8000 15
0x8000,15
addr:0x8000,irq:15
etc, nothing worked :(

Is this hda? I've just dropped in a 30Gb (240h63s3877c) as hdb, c1-19 as swap,
rest as native. df currently reports 27G 24G 2.3G 91% hdb2. If yours is hda,
perhaps try a smaller one and use this as hdb.

I don't know about merging to the *exact same mountpoint*, but from /mnt,
you can have many 'subdirs'. I have about 8 subdirs on /mnt, one of
which is a samba link to this whole machine.

This is PCI board, you don't need to give it IRQs and all the stuff.
Compaq's usually have a SmartStart CD which sets different settings for
different OS

It should be. Look at it and see if you can find any 28p DIL
circuit, which should be the boot EPROM. Did you choose SCSI
first in the BIOS boot order selection? Elsewise, you could
prepare a 10MB (or so) partition on your IDE drive and format it
as /boot, using the SCSI drive for all the other stuff. Has
worked nicely for me and my non-bootable SCSI adapters.

Depends on your needs - if you also want the GUI (graphical user interface)
X-Window you need at least a 200 MHz with 32 megs RAM for proper working
If you need console "only" a 486er with 66 Mhz and 8 megs of RAM should be
enough.
I have an Pentium 100 with 24 megs RAM acting as an masqerading ISDN router
and fileserver for Unix/Win clients without any problems.
My workstation is an AMD K6-3 128 megs RAM - runs perfecly Quake 3 in
640x480 with all effects enabled
I think you should get a very good testmachine/server for about $200 -
depending on your needs

Hello
This is my own example of /etc/X11/XF86Config for xfree86 3.3.6. I suggest
you to use KDE instead of Gnome because with gnome you're going to have
problems when trying to pick a color (i.e. set the background)and other
problems as well. With KDE you're gonna still have a problems but they're
just annoying and not so constant.

Then i installed RedHat 7.0 and my own
