Subject: Need help with my USR modem
Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 00:16:01 GMT

Hello,

Actually, I'm using a high speed modem (adsl) to connect to the internet.
I'd like to use my usr robotics modem 56K voice PNP ISA as answering machine and
fax.

I know its not a "winmodem" because it was woking fine before.

 After installed Mandrake 7.2, everything is ok except the modem.
Harddrake sees the modem so it looks good so far. If I start "kppp"
and choose /dev/ttyS1 (With win98 the modem is at com2, int3, address
2f8) then query the modem, it says "the modem is not responding...")

I tried the command "setserial" but did not work...or maybe I dont know I
to use it correctly! :)

Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Eric.

Asus generally makes decent boards. The Apollo Pro is certainly a
better choice than any of Intel's i8xx offerings, and the other hardware
specced looks OK. The vendor gives me pause; two of our machines had
motherboards that were defective. Maybe you'll be luckier.

Anyway, if you're not doing SMP, why are you looking at a PIII?
Thunderbirds are cheaper, for equal or greater performance.

Eric,

Thanks for your input. I will try this out.

I should also mention a special thanks to Danny for his input (i.e. email).
Thanks, again.

Because I was able to install Linux 5.0 last year without a hitch, I
anticipated installing the newer version just as simply- NOT. This has been
a learning experience. The typical reason why someone would purchase Redhat
is for ease of installation. I didn't bargain on all the "installation
research". Surely, they are aware that the ABit, Asus, and e few others are
amongst the most popular boards on the market. Installations usualy
determine customer satisfaction, too. Where ya at there...Redhat??? (But,
they do make pretty CD's; ya know with their logo on them and everything-
look away!)

I am determined to work through this...like pushing the wrinkle in the rug.
I intend to share all with everyone once I do.

The bottom line on this one is: the v2.3 and 2.4 version will fly. Below
that, you'll have a modified installation (always a risky proposition). The
new Linux 7 is not at 2.3. Ergo, you'll go through this, too, if you've got
a Promise, Highpoint, or another controller that works at ATA66 or above.

...ABit at a time...

Eric,

I just tried this. When I press alt-F2, absolutely nothing happens. I was
waiting for a console to input the 'cat /proc/pci', but never got the
chance. Ergo, I cannot get the parameter values to pass.

I am also on a BE6II. I have RH 5.0, 6.2, and 7. All of them have behaved
the same way- I get the Welcome to Linux 7 screen (i.e. Text) and answer
question about setup (i.e. keyboard, etc...) until I choose the installation
type (i.e. workstation, server, etc...) and I get the error screen telling
me that there are no drives. Then, it boots up again.

Yeah, I tried alt-F2, ctrl-F2, ...I'm reaching! Without the console, of
course, I am unable to query for this device info.

Any clues?

Exchange your memory and get linux compatible memory. Just kidding :)

put append="mem=256M" in your /etc/lilo.conf and execute lilo.

$ su -
password: <secret>
# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak # just in case you screw up.
# vi /etc/lilo.conf # use your editor to modify lilo.conf

# this is an example of lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda3
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=dos

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
        label=linux
        read-only
# here is the append line to add
        append="mem=256M"
        root=/dev/hda4

other=/dev/hda1
        label=dos

# /sbin/lilo
# reboot # cross your fingers and 256M will be used.

You may have the jumper on the CD and the Samsung HD both set for
Master. Or do you have one of those "twisted pair" cables that sets
Master and Slave?

You may also have to add a line to /etc/fstab for the CD to mount on
boot. I initially didn't have the CD mount on boot on my system, and
this caused problems with other drives and partitions, even though
they were in /etc/fstab. I also couldn't mount the CD manually. Even
editing fstab and adding the CD didn't help. I finally had to
erase and completely reinstall Linux to solve the problem. Never
was able to discover why the problem existed in the first place.

I have recently come into possession of several old Informer serial
terminals. I have no documentation and cannot find the manufacturer (I
suspect they have gone out of business or changed names). The only info I
have been able to find is in Eric Raymond's termcap file, where the Informer
304 is mentioned.

The two models I have are Informer 203/378 and 205/378.

Does anyone know
1) what happened to Informer?
2) where I can find more info about these terminals?
3) any settings that I can use in termcap/terminfo to get these working?

Thanks in advance,

Ftape v3.x is _very_ old. It's been at version 4.something for awhile
with a number of fixes.
Best to get that and configure/compile it outside of the kernel
source.

>I did the following:

I'm not sure but is there a missing module there? The order
I think (if it matters, probably not) is
ftape
zftape
drive/interface-specific module(?)

I'm remembering an ftape-internal.o that I believe is used with
the floppy. I use the backpack driver for the external Ditto 2GB
so I don't pay much attention to the other stuff.
If you have the 3.04 source (outside the kernel stuff) it came
with two scripts to load and unload the modules for testing.

Here's some of it minus some comments.
Long lines broken with "\".

#!/bin/bash
#
insmod ./ftape.o ft_fdc_driver=ftape-internal,bpck-fdc:trakker,none,none \
 ft_tracings=3,3,3,3,3
insmod ./zftape.o ft_major_device_number=27 # ${27-FT_MAJOR}
#
#
# NOTE: YOU DON'T NEED zft-compressor.o UNLESS you want to decompress
# compressed volumes created by ftape-3.x. Writing of compressed
# volumes is no longer supported.
#
insmod ./zft-compressor.o
#
insmod ./ftape-internal.o ft_fdc_fc10=0 ft_fdc_mach2=0 ft_fdc_base=0x210 \
 ft_fdc_dma=0 ft_fdc_threshold=15 # ft_fdc_rate_limit=4000
modprobe parport || true # pre-2.1 kernels don't have the parport
module
insmod ./trakker.o
insmod ./bpck-fdc.o
#
# end

I use a modified version of the insert and remove scripts for
use with tob.
Obviously most of that doesn't apply but check the docs for
further info.

># ls -l /dev/qft0
>

Is this mt a renaming/link of the ftape-tool's ftmt?
Anyway, that error might be due to no having ftape-internal.o
loaded or you'll have to redo the devices.
The source comes with a MAKEDEV.ftape to do that.

Also, when you load ftape and zftape take a look in /proc/ftape.
This will tell you if all the needed drivers are there.
In /proc/ftape/driver/ are three entries: drivers, memory, and version.

cat /proc/ftape/driver/drivers
  Lowlevel fdc drivers registered with ftape
  bpck-fdc -- Micro Solutions ``Backpack'' parallel port floppy tape drives
  Drivers registered for device 0: bpck-fdc
  [...]

cat /proc/ftape/driver/memory
              kmalloc

        driver    qft0    qft1    qft2    qft3    total
=======================================================
used:        0       0       0       0       0        0
peak:        0     296       0       0       0      296
[...]

In /proc/ftape/0/ you should have info/entries regarding
 cartridge  controller  history  tapedrive

Just some stuff to look into. Excuse anything that doesn't apply.

The file SUPPORTED.CARDS in the pcmcia release lists many cards that are
believed to be supported for that release. Be sure to determine whether or not
your laptop supports the faster Cardbus (32-bit) cards before buying those
cards.

For what it's worth, I've used the LinkSys EtherFast 10/100 LAN + 56K V.90
Modem PC card with integrated ports (which only fits in the top pcmcia slot).
When I'm expecting to just use the network and not a modem, I've also used the
LinkSys EtherFast 32-bit auto 10/100 Cardbus PC card with dongle. In the past,
I've used a 3com 3CCE589ET 10 Mbs card.  The only special configuration I
needed to do was enable serial interrupt sharing in building the kernel so that
both the ethernet and modem of the combo card could be used (which is
documented in the README for the PCMCIA) as well as the normal mods to run the
new PCMCIA packages on Red Hat (which is also documented).
