Subject: Graphics (monitor) problems
Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 22:06:00 GMT

I have a generic Packard Bell monitor that is not on a list of hardware
for monitor drivers in Mandrake 7.2 When I install the system, in
defaults to (generic super SVGA 70mhz) monitor. My video card is
Trident 3D blade. When the system starts up it has scrambled view and
blinks. I reinstalled and switched the monitor to standard VGA.
When I go into (failsafe) boot, it works perfectly. When I boot
regularly it seems like the left side of the display is fine, but the
right side is doubling the icons. Why is this happening in regular boot
but not in failsafe boot? Can some one help as to how to fix this
problem.  Best settings, etc...

TIA

Ilya Sterin

  Good point. This has an earlier ServerWorks chipset, not the i840. : )

No. It's NOT in the kernel source, that's why i'm posting this.
It is in Mandrake's and SuSe's kernels, but the module is not
a part of the mainstream kernel. That is why I wondered where
I can find a patch for the mainstream kernel.

Also try adding 'linear' to /etc/lilo.conf in the global section. My
Dell 486 had the same symptoms (ancient IDE drives).

[tim@dell tim]# head /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=30
default=linux
linear

If this is the problem, then use the LILO options:

disk=/dev/hda
   bios=0x80
disk=/dev/hdb
  bios=0x81
disk=/dev/sda
  bios=0x82

to get LILO in step with the BIOS setup.

Remember, LILO uses BIOS calls to load the system. If the BIOS assigns device
codes in a creative manner, LILO cannot guess what they are. TELL lilo what
they are.

If the BIOS has assigned device code 0x82 to this device, you may ignore this
warning message. If not, you will not be able to boot from this disk with
LILO.

Versions of LILO beyond 21.2 can boot from large disks using the EDD bios
calls (int 0x13). The 'lba32' option turns on this feature.

You haven't stated what version of LILO you are using. Latest is 21.6 + 2
patches at:

Versions of LILO beyond 21.4 come with a diagnostic floppy, made by "make
floppy" from the LILO source directory. LILO 21.6 includes many of these
diagnostics in a "real-mode" diagnostic facility:

    /sbin/lilo -T help

for more information.

Help,

I have an IBM i 1200 Series ThinkPad. I finally manged to load Mandrake 7.2,
which I bought, on my ThinkPad. Either they had a BIOS restriction from
booting off non MS CD's or Diskettes, or a BIOS problem. Anyway the install
found the card and installed the Xfree86 server. When I try to start "X" it
errors. When I change the display resolution to 8bpp I get a 2x10" window
w/the entire X desktop compressed w/in it.. I've tried everthing I can think
of. I've visited linux laptop web pages, and discussion groups. Does anyone
know how I can get this working.

Thanks,
Glenn

At first try using no acceleration for XFree86, and then enable acceleration
params one-by-one and step back when you get that faulty picture back

We don't object to plain text.

We object to people wrapping plain text in MIME, which is not, by the
way, plain text.

It's not much use, period. USENET convention is a four-line .sig
delimited by two hyphens and a space. Netscape V-Cards are (much)
longer than four lines, and are delimited by MIME code.

I believe his point is that there is _never_ a use for MIME on a
non-binary newsgroup.

NEVER POST ATTACHMENTS TO A NON-BINARY NEWSGROUP. NONE OF THE FIVE
GROUPS YOU POSTED TO ARE BINARY GROUPS.
