This helped a little, but I still get the error message. The only
difference now is that there is something that says: Starting up ISA PNP
devices, when the system starts up. Just something to note; there is no
isapnp.conf file on my computer, and when I did pnpdump, there was no
output.

I installed this oss package, and it all went smoothly, except there was an
error running soundon, and in the log file it says: sb: dsp reset failed
Oh yes, the sound still doesn't work either...

I need a modem for my 386 that will be running as a dial on demand
router. I know that it probably sounds stupid to want a dial-up
connection to share a 56k internet access but I just want it to
experiment with. I would get an external modem but I read that older
386 computers didn't have fifoed serial ports and that an external modem
would be a lot slower with one of these serial ports. What is a good
isa 56k modem chipset to look for?

Don't buy tekram. I don't know where I got the idea that they were
linux-friendly but they are not. The reason I asked the question here is
because I wanted to buy hardware by a company actively supporting linux.
Tekram does not. They do provide drivers for their hardware, but they
are not GPL'd, and thus the drivers cannot become part of the kernel
source or be included with distro's like debian. Which really sucks for
me because the kernel I boot to install my system must support the card.

I recently started using a package called turboprint from
http://www.turboprint.de for my hp952c printer. It is beta software,
but I found the print quality quite good, and the install is quite
easy. They also support the hp93xC as well.

Apparently, your "real newsreader" is not able to properly receive and act on
cancel messages.
Netscape 4 is seriously broken, but at least it does that properly. I plan
to switch to Kmail (it does HTML) and Konqueror, but they aren't quite up to
speed yet. I was waiting for Netscape 6, but it isn't quite ready either.
Someone complained that I forgot to turn the vCard of when I posted.
I canceled the messages and corrected my ACCIDENTAL MISTAKE.
Now you post to complain about that.
Perhaps there is some chat group devoted to carping about other posters that
you could change to.
I use (or used to use) this group to try to help other users with their
hardware.
I will now unsubscribe to this newsgroup and leave it to the INTERNET POLICE.

Yes, I know that. I should have indicated that what I did was tell
Netscape to send it in MIME. But, it didn't because there weren't any
8-bit characters to encode.

Most definitely. That sounds like a very nice machine you're going to
have there.
Redhat, in general, is more geared towards inexperienced users or users
who don't have very much, if any prior experience with unix. As such,
they tend to over-automate a lot of the procedures in redhat, and to
experienced users, that is just inefficent, wasteful, and sacrifices
flexibility.
The latest version of perl5 is included with the standard slackware
iso's. You may have to add additional libraries and packages to perl
(such as libwww as I had to), but that's not terribly difficult, and
you'd have to do the same under redhat as well.

Could anyone tell me which CDROM drive is the most compatible with

harddrive? What about 3dfx voodoo3 2000? I am new at this and trying

Subject: Wrong IO or IRQ?
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 04:00:59 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to set up a 2nd Ethernet Card on my Mandrake 7.1 Box.
The first card is a Linksys PCI and works fine. However, the second
card I had to use a ISA card(due to lack of PCI slots on my old
Compaq).
Since I had to go ISA I picked a 3Com 3c509b-TPO card... I don't
have DOS on my linux box, so I have to put my card into my Windows box
to use the 3Com config utility to disable the PNP and set the IO and
IRQ, and then take the card out and put it in my linux box. Is this a
problem? Should the card be configured in my linux box? Again I don't
have DOS on it. Does 3COM have a linux utility for configuring the card?
Anyway, as I stated above. I disabled the the PNP and look at the
IRQ and IO using the 3Com config utility on my Windows system and then
wrote down the IO and IRQ. I then took the card out and put it into my
linux system and tryed to set it up. I added:
alias eth1 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=5 (I got the io and irq from the config
utility.)
When I start up my system. It goes through and sets up the first
card fine (eth0) then when it hits the second card it says "Invalid
parameter parm_io... 3c509.o failed... etc."
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advanced
Adam

Subject: 3ware nightmares

G'Day
I am having an aweful time trying to get a 3ware 6200 working with RH
6.2 It is a MSI K7T pro 2 board with 2 segate atat 66 7200 baracuda 2
drives, the es 6200 and an Athlong thunderbird 800. 128 mb 133 FSB ram.
Now I follow all the instructions and the system will not boot off the
array. I curently have a ATAPI CD drive as master on channel 1 for
intalling the system (As NFS install was stuffing up) and I will remove
this cd drive once the OS is up.
I had similar problems with a compaq proliant and a smart 2 controller.
That is one, can install the OS and go through all the options, but come
the first boot post install, the kernel panics as it can't moutn the
root FS.
The root FS is obviously where the 3ware driver module is - so it can't
load the module, so can't access the root FS, so can't load the
module.... chicken and egg.
This was solved by hitting ALT F2 just before the final reboot (On the
compaq) and doing a kernel recompile and installing the new kernel.
I tried that with RH 6.2 and the escalade using a new frsh 2.2.18
download. As 2.2.15 was uspposed to have the 3ware driver included and
RH 6.2 uses 2.2.14.
I check that the driver was there in the source tree - it was. I did a
make menuconfig but I could not find the controller listed anywhere to
select an * and make it compiled into the kernel.
I tried to edit the makefile in the scsi dir - but as I know nothign
about make files (I assumed the optin to compile or not or a module or
into the kernel was set in there??) and the sane problem persists.
I downlaod the new manual off the 3ware site and still it says the smae
things. Just select expert... blah, blah, blah...... select drivers,
etc...
What did you do special? What am I missing? What can I try??? How
come I can't get this damm thing to work when I follow the instructions
to the tee? Must the driver be compiled in? Or is it OK as a loadable
module?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Richard.
