If you're using a modern distribution and well supported hardware you really
shouldn't have to compile anything. Save that for later when you've gotten

That's called being "case sensitive" and it's a common feature of all
unices. It's really no big deal once you get used to it.

Well, some distributions do a pretty good job of doing this for you with
most common hardware and even Windows can be a major PITA with some
hardware. Have you installed WinNT or 2K recently?

I think you took the previous poster's statement all wrong. The reason
winmodems are soo cheap is because the manufactuer has left out important
parts that make up a real modem and use a special driver (ie software) to
emulate (ie. fake) Windows into using it. In a very literal sense, large
portions of the modem reside on the CD that came with the modem and without
a version of that special software your modem is little more than a
paperweight. I won't get into fault except to say that you chose that
particular piece of hardware. Noone in this group told you to buy it or
twisted your arm.

Windows is just an operating system, it can't possibly be hurt by insults.
Although I wouldn't call Linux unorganized it does lack the consistancy
among different distributions that some would like. That said, different
versions of Windows arn't exactly consistant either.

Over 90% of the people use the OS that came with their computer and even
then they have to get someone else to help install new hardware or
re-install the OS.

Hold on, Corel Linux should come with wvdial already compiled. Just look at
the instructions for installing new software and follow them to install the
package "wvdial". You should NOT have to compile anything.

Hey all,

Well, I finally decided to wonder out of Windows land, and give Linux a
try. I'm going to use Mandrake 7.2, and dual-boot it with WinME. I
have a quick question for you all though:

I'm using an Intel 815e motherboard, and an ATI Rage Pro 128 video card
(the onboard Intel graphics card is disabled). My question is, will
Linux (either the 2.2 kernal or 2.4 kernal) be compatible with this
setup? I won't end up frying my monitor when I install it?

Thanks in advance.

I am trying to use the RH ppp dialer, on RH7.

I set everything up and it seemed ok.

Then I changed the advanced settings so that it is activated at boot
time.

Now when it boots up, it hangs on bringing up ppp0.

I am trying the interactive setup now to get X to come up, but no luck
so far.

Any suggestions, short of a reinstall.

Hi,

I finally finished setting up my Linux system with an LS-120 UHD ATAPI
Floppy drive and would like to be able to use it as a 1.44MB floppy drive
with the mtools utility, i.e. mdir, mcopy, etc. Everytime when I issue
"mdir a:", my Linux system complained with the following messages:

        init: set default params
        Cannot initialize 'A:'

Does anyone know how I can setup the LS-120 drive acts as a 1.44 floppy
drive?

then since last week, sometimes it reboots by itself without any reason

I can only confirm that I had a similar problems with 2.2.18 and I had to
switch back to 2.2.12. Here are a couple of suggestions that may help you:

** The bttv driver in 2.2.18 is quit old (5.23, I think and it hasn't been
significantly updated since 2.2.12). The current version is 7.54. It may make
sense to upgrade just the driver, although I would upgrade to the 2.4 kernel
instead.

** The driver needs i2c, as you mentioned and it may need the new i2c drivers,
from the lm_sensors project. I patched my kernel with the latest i2c (2.5.4)
but it still doesn't work. But I forgot to enable I2C bit-banging interfaces in
kernel config which produces the i2c-algo-bit module, perhaps that is the
problem.

I don't use mtools but my LS-120 works fine with 1.44 floppies and the gnu

What happens if you use ls instead of mdir?

I've heard of heat doing this, power line spikes or brownouts, and I've
seen software do it (a cygwin debugger that caused reboot on two
different machines, different hardware, if you debug then stop the
debugger). If it might be collecting dust that stops heat dissipation,
acting like an insulator, try dusting it out everywhere. An article you
might find interesting (no idea if the cooling they are talking about is
any good or not, just interesting):
