I've done this before - in a more round-about way - dump a
frame image to a disk file as ascii using $display, write a
simple program to convert the ascii to binary RGB triples
and then convert into something you can display using one
of the public domain image conversion utilities like
rawtoppm | ppmtopng to make a png file you can display
in a web browser or other image utility.

I've used this succesfully to test several display controllers,
an image scaler and a color space converter

Looking around a bit, it turns out that the Compaq Microcom 510 modem
does indeed use a parallel port. Bizarre. I would have jumped up and
down and said nobody was that dumb, too. Responding to two posts at
once, here...

The IEEE 1284 standard for parallel ports has been around for a long,
long time and specifies bidirectional transfers. So it's certainly
possible.

How? I didn't dig hard enough to find Compaq's information on the
thing, but a review at
http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/overview/0,8826,64047,00.html
quotes them as claiming 475 Kbps throughput. From a 56K modem? That
would have to be some awfully, awfully special data; the modem would
have to manage a 10:1 compresson on it! Fewer errors? The errors
in the serial cable are already completely irrelevant compared to what
the phone system is going to do to you.

That's one. Another one is where do you hook up your printer?

It does sound like a practical joke perpetrated by somebody who'd
decided to leave the company...

Sorry, you boght a lemon. See if you can get your money back.

My experience was that you should buy a new motherboard -- I made the
mistake of getting two AladdinV motherboards (Gigabyte GA-5AX) to run
with AMD K6 processors. One wound up in a Windows environment, one in
Linux. Neither I on the Linux side, nor my wife on the Windows side,
was ever able to get either one of them to run reliably.

We updated to the latest BIOS patches. We applied every Windows patch
we could find. We applied every Linux patch we could find, running
versions 2.2.17, 2.2.18, and 2.4.0-test11. Nothing worked reliably,
though each more recent Linux kernel was better than the one before.
If you're set on keeping the motherboard, go to 2.4.0. Don't try to
get 2.2.14 to behave with it.

The PIII, Intel 815 based motherboard that replaced the Windows one is
doing very nicely. Haven't had a chance to install yet, but we've
gotten an Athlon/AMD chipset configuration (Gigabyte 7IXE,
substantially identical to my solid-as-a-rock machine) for the Linux
environment.

I notice there are still Aladdin V fixes rolling in. I've got an old
case and a little disk and some memory lying around, so I'm going to
build a K6/Aladdin V system around one of the lemons. Its name on the
home network is going to be ``taz,'' after the Tazmanian Devil, a
Looney Toons character who periodically just loses it and goes nuts.
If there is ever a kernel that will get it to run well, I'll build
another machine around the other one, rename them buster and babs, and
use them for compute servers.

Well, there are several ways of doing this. The common way is to use the ppp
dialing scripts in dir. /etc/ppp and make some adjustments like filling in
you're ISP account data, etc. I'm not gonna tell you how to do that, read
the ppp-howto and ISP-hookup-howto .

Another way that's much easier is to use kppp, the ppp dialer for kde. It is
a gui front end to the pppd deamon and very easy to use. Just run kppp,
choose setup and fill in you're modem, ISP/account, DNS adresses data, etc
and you should be up and running in no time. Off course first read the
documentation from kppp.

There also seems to be a gnome version, gppp, but I'm not familiar with
that.

On my KT-7, with the disk on the HPT370 controller, Mdk7.2 found all disks
without these options, as it has backported support for the HPT366/370
family. mdk7.1 and below will be different though.

;) Actually, the KT133 is rather good on my setup (Abit KT7, Tbird 1G),
rock solid in linux. Windoze is another story altogether.. I've had some
minor problems with the southbridge (strange IDE behaviour at times), but
this will be fixed in 2.4.2. Also, the new 686B fixes some bugs.

BTW, AMD seems to have a great deal of faith in VIA following their success
with the KT133, as VIA will be the primary source of third-party chipsets
for the Palomino and other new processors from AMD.

IMHO the KT133 is well supported under Linux, but upgrading to 2.4.2 will
probably be worth the d/l.

I'm wondering what's a decent AGP *1x* video card that will work well with
XFree86 4. I need something for a somewhat dated motherboard (Intel
DK440LX) that sucks less than an ATI Xpert 98 (what I'm using now). I
have a decent monitor, so I want something that can do 1600x1200 @
24/32bpp at a good refresh rate. Oh, and Nvidia boards are right
out--this mobo hates 'em.

Suggestions appreciated...
