Hi,

I am having two directories /usr(/dev/hda6) which is almost got filled up,
whereas the /temp(/dev/hda11) which is almost empty. I want to swap some
free space form /tmp directory to /usr directory so that i can install few
more programs on my machine. Can i do that using fdisk, if so how can i do
that. I know it will easy with Partition Magic, but i don't have that
software.

TIA

I don't have any Athlon-based systems, though, so I can't comment on it.

Had the same problem and it was caused by an IRQ conflict. PCI will support
multiple devices using the same IRQ, but some devices do not always get
along. Check you motherboard manual and find out how IRQ sharing is done. My
problem was that the Ethernet card (same model as yours) did not like to share
the IRQ with the onboard disk control. Move the Ethernet card to another slot
and see what happens. You may have to try several arrangements before
everything works.

Hmmm... I'm running SuSE 7.1 Professional on a Gateway GP-566 system,
and I'm getting speeds reported at 37MB/s. Is that the fastest ATA100 is
going so far? Intel i810 motherboard, 256MB RAM, and the Promise
controller. SuSE picked it up without any magic IDE params, unlike
Redhat 7. The only complaints I have are with X and the i810 and Gateway
910B monitors. I'm entertaining thoughts of tossing the Redhat X server
rpms on the system.

But it works, and the kernel is 2.4.0 and 2.2.18 (as for patches, I
don't know; those are the two preconfigured kernels in SuSE 7.1.).

Decreasing a partition in size is always a dangerous operation.
There are a handful of programs that can do that besides PM :
http://ext2resize.sourceforge.net/
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/
But I haven't used either one.
An alternative would be to slice up your tmp partition (provided you can delete
everything on it) and create a thrid partition. You could put /usr/local
into the new partition.

As a point of fact, Lilo never had a problem with large disks. It was the P.C.
BIOS that had the problem.

On systems where 1024 cylinders, i.e. SCSI, lilo had no problems.

The issue is that the PC BIOS could not address a disk with too large a number
of heads or cylinders, the work around was to make a small "boot" partition,
well within the 1024, 16 head, 63 sector limit.

Most modern BIOS supplied on motherboards today can provide enough information
to boot correctly through a new API.

Don't think so--the K6-3 is most like a Pentium in its internals, though
the 2.4.x series has an option for "K6 1/2/3" in the CPU Type dialog.
The Athlon has a few things that the K6-3 does not have, so compiling
for Athlon would probably build a kernel with Athlon-specific
instructions, leading to a kernel that doesn't even boot successfully.
If you're using the 2.2.x series, an Athlon is most similar to a
PPro/PII.

Go ahead and try it if you want--just make sure you can boot your old
kernel from LILO in case of a problem.. I'd try this myself if I had a
spare case to put the K6 board in....

Just wondering, I am shortly going to put a script together to backup a
complete copy of the harddisk on our RH7 server on a Ecrix SCSI tape drive.
The machine runs as a fileserver, webserver (intranet), mailserver and
database processor. I want the script to run automatically every couple of
days.

Should the script to run the backup (at, say 2AM) run something like

- shut down each server process manually (using each /etc/rc.d/init.d file)
- prepare each tape
- tar filesystem to /dev/tape (or whatever)
- restart each server + check
- email root results

- or is there a better way (for example, changing run level to single-user)?

I'm not worried about losing the use of the server for a few hours, my only
worry is that something may fail and knock out the server permanently (and
as I'm not always in the office, this could be a problem). Are there any
scripts downloadable? I haven't got the server or tape drive running yet,
but just want to think about it for now :-)

Cheers
John

The one he wants to decrease is /tmp, which doesn't matter. The init
scripts for Debian, at least, wipe everything in there each reboot
anyway (I believe).

I have a problem with my self-made linux "distribution". The sound is

But when I log as my normal user, the sound doesn't work at all and
the KDE sound architecture crashes...
I tried the following :
create a group called audio
assign my user to that group
chgrp audio /dev/dsp*
chgrp audio /dev/audio*
chgrp audio /dev/mixer*
chgrp audio /dev/midi*
chgrp audio /dev/sndstat

But it didn't help... Help :)

Becouse this will break a lot of useful things, like dhcp.

And disabling CPUID wouldn't break anything but some useless copy
protection schemes.

Moreover any company which uses CPUID for copy protection scheme should
be avoided. Intel PII and above processors lasts for few years at max.
Then they die of diffusion (I've experienced it several times already).
Now imagine that you have business critical app, which depends on CPUID.
You happily use it for year or two, then your processor dies without any
forewarning.

At first you'll have a hard time searching for processor which is
already out of production, becouse modern ones do not work in your
motherboard, then you'll have to do something with CPUID-bound license,
becouse CPUID your license bound to is in the trashcan with your dead
processor.

I have a static IP from my ISP - DHCP is provided by my local router.
Moot anyway because the problem has been solved: I had to set my BIOS
to non plug-and-play OS :P then everything worked. Now I have to
figure out how to get xfree86 to support my voodoo5...

I *almost* got it, by choosing voodoo3 from the xf86config database
(voodoo5 wasn't listed) but I end up with a 1280x1024 desktop that is
zoomed in to a 640x480 corner, scrollable by mouse, but still
annoying. The picture also has a barely detectable shimmy. I've
obviously done something wrong. Found my way to dmi.sourceforge.net,
but can't make heads or tails of their instructions.

Split your /tmp partition. Then create a softlink to the additional
directories you put on the new partition from within /usr.

Go to Nvidia.com and dl the lastest Linux drivers, and the ReadMe as well.
I'm using SuSE 7.1 and for the GLX rpms I had to give command "rpm -ihv
NVIDIA_GLX.....(specific to your distro).....i386.rpm --nodeps --force" and
for the kernel drivers I issued the command "rpm -ihv
NVIDIA_kernel...(specific to your disrtro)...i386.rpm --force". then I had
to go to the XF86Config (or in a lot of case the active config file for
newer X's is the XF86Config-4 file, SuSE did away with this redundency) and
change the driver option for "nv" to "nvidia". Then in my specific distro
(SuSE 7.1) it ran the command "switch2nvidia_glx". It worked fine.
However, use the one specific to your distrobution, I can not stress this
enough - as using the wrong you is a major pain and in some cases I know
ppl that have had to re-install the OS. Now, it you use the source
drivers you simply run the make command and it autoconfigs and automakes
(providing your sys has the automake package - most do). The change the X
config file for the video card driver from "nv" to "nvidia". Should work
fine. Your can also edit the X config file to load certain modules like
"Load "glx" and "dri" and "GLcore".
Hope this helps!

He did say he has a K6-III+, not a K6-III, which means his processor
supports the same instructions as the Athlon (including Enhanced 3DNow!).
That said, gcc doesn't even generate MMX code, let alone anything newer
(3DNow!, SSE, etc.). The only software for Linux that's 3DNow!-optimized
uses inline assembly to include the instructions. The only thing gcc does
which is somewhat processor-specific is it'll schedule instructions in an
optimal manner for the processor you specify. AMD processors tend not to
suffer as much from non-optimal scheduling as do Intel processors, but if
you have an option to optimize for the K6-* or Athlon, you might as well
take advantage of it.
