Subject: No sound for WinTV PCI-FM
Hi,
I have installed a Hauppauge WinTV PCI-FM card for SuSE 7.1 with kernel
2.2.18. The card is recognized properly by the bttv driver (BT878) and I
get a pretty good video signal. However, I can get no sound, although
the mixer settings are ok and line-in is not muted for the sound card.
On Win98 everything works properly, so there is no hardware problem,
either. If I activate debugging for the driver and then start kwintv, my
/var/log/messages says the following:

It seems that the sound chip of the tv card is recognized (msp3415D-B3),
but the driver tries to start the module for msp3410, which is not
successful. Maybe the sound chip msp3415 is not supported by the kernel
module msp3400.o. Do you have any information, if that is true? Do you
have any other idea what might be going wrong?
Thanks,

I had to boot my notebook in Win 2000 (a fine OS in my book) to write this
message.
I wanted to be able to write it from Redhat Linux 7.0 Here is my problem
As stated I am running Linux on a notebook, my network connection is via a
3Com Cardbus (3CXFEM656C) I can not seem to find drivers for this card (they
may not exist, not in the HCL) and should I find the drivers I do not
understand how to install them in Linux.
I am using shared network access through a router if that makes any
difference.

I have a HP Omnibook 900C with a 3CCFE575CT pcmcia network card. I am
using RedHat 7.
I cannot make the thing work. The machine has to be reset if I start
pcmcia.
I think the problem is with the driver or some archane set-up of pcmcia.
Does anybody out there know?

Just bought a Sony 8/4/32 CD-RW unit which will write only at half the
rated speeds even though the media is rated higher. Best Buy won't take it
back after 30 days, I couldn't get a number for Sony CD-RW support (A
12-minute wait for a person in digital camcorders was the best offer I got,
so I hung up), and I didn't even get an acknowledgement of the email I sent
through their website, which has no concept of the term 'troubleshooting'.
If I finally do get through to warranty service (assuming it exists), am I
likely to be just as unhappy about it as I am about the unit?

I'm using rp-pppoe 2.6, is working well but when i used the on-demand

here is the situation
I guess that if i enable the on-demand function then it will go online
automatic, when i open the browser, but nothing happen, i can't access to
internet, so you go to the linux computer and type "adls-start", it seem
normal and the linux showed the connection
is successful, but i just can not across the internet, then i type ifconfig
to see the connection success or not, but i can't see the ppp0 interface.
I let the linux do the internet gateway and i used other pc to access the
internet, when i want to go online, i have to telnet the linux and start the
connection, some time i will forget to stop it, so that the line keep on in
all day (the internet charge is expensive in my country)
i really hope that the pppoe can be come up in automatic when i access to
internet and stop in a given time.
im using redhat 6.0
kernel verson is : 2.2.5-15
ppp verson is : 2.3.7-2
and i used winME to connect it
Thank a lot!

Subject: Cold-Swapping on a hdd Streamer
Date: 28 Mar 2001 14:13:39 GMT
Hello,
Im planning the following:
there is a second hdd in one of these quick change frames for ide drives (what
s the exakt english expression?) where I dd the contents of the identical
primary drive once a day. (This should become a hdd streamer)
I would like to take out the second hdd without having to down the server.
Two problems remain:
1. The second hdd is still powered how do I solve this?
2. Ill have to load the ide driver as a module, I guess, while taking out the
second hdd can I still access the first one? I mean can I speak to each
controller separately?
In the Raid Howto it is just said:
This has been a hot topic on the linux-kernel list for some time. Although hot
swapping of drives is supported to some extent, it is still not something one
can do easily.
Hot-swapping IDE drives
Don't ! IDE doesn't handle hot swapping at all. Sure, it may work for you, if
your IDE driver is compiled as a module (only possible in the 2.2 series of
the kernel), and you re-load it after you've replaced the drive. But you may
just as well end up with a fried IDE controller, and you'll be looking at a
lot more down-time than just the time it would have taken to replace the drive
on a downed system.
The main problem, except for the electrical issues that can destroy your
hardware, is that the IDE bus must be re-scanned after disks are swapped. The
current IDE driver can't do that. If the new disk is 100% identical to the old
one (wrt. geometry etc.), it may work even without re-scanning the bus, but
really, you're walking the bleeding edge here.
Any comments? Solution?
Thanks!

I have the same problem with this printer. It prints some nonsense out.
Strangely enough, I have in the driver library an Epson Stylus Colour 800
by GIMP (the image editing program) which say v4 (works when I test page)
compared to Pro 4.1.2 which does not work. Unfortunately The printer
management program does not get it that I have a new printer and fails.
Only if I drag a file to the Printer icon, which in turn asks me which
printer I wish to use can I print out. I would also point out that I am a
newbie regarding Linux, so there you have it.
Keep me posted with any answers!

It means that the kernel has detected 2 USB ports. It's neither an
error nor a warning, unless you don't have that many ports.

I'm almost 100% positive that those drives do *not* do hardware compression.
You'll have to pipe the dump output through something like gzip and then
put it onto the tape. Amanda, a very nice backup manager package, will
do this for you, although it takes a bit to get it set up.
And, of course, don't count on getting 2:1, as the manufacturers claim.
Compression ratios vary widely with the type of data you're compressing.
Plain text will shrink quite a bit, while a disk full of .jpgs won't
get much smaller.

What kind of SCSI card? If it's a single channel LVD card, you're going
to take a massive hit on your hard drive speed by connecting the PlexWriter
(which is a Narrow Ultra SCSI device).
Also, note that you're connecting the Narrow PlexWriter to a Wide port
on the host adapter. When doing this, you *must* actively terminate the
high bits on the SCSI channel. Does your cable do this? It's doubtful
that it does, in which case you need to buy a 68->50 Wide->Narrow *Active*
adapter.
BTW, don't give up on this. Plextor makes *nice* drives. Once you get
it working, you're likely to never get a coaster for the entire long life
of the drive.

"JBOD" is an acronym for "just a bunch of disks." (Ya, they thought
pretty hard on that name ;) ) That's what I suspect you're trying to
manage.
The main caveats:
scsiadd doesn't always work if you have multiple SCSI buses (i.e.
multiple adapters or a dual channel adapter). scsiadd can change the
device mappings (i.e. /dev/sda might not refer to the same SCSI hard
drive after you've run scsiadd), confusing apps which acess these device
files. scsiadd should not be run if it might re-map a device file
that's currently open (i.e. /dev/sda0 is mounted on /, but running
scsiadd forces /dev/sda0 to point to a partition on some other SCSI hard
drive. Such a radical change while the drive is mounted tends to make
the entire system crash)
Basically, you need to make sure that scsiadd won't cause any open
device files to map to different hardware than they currently map to.
This requires you to know the basic methodology the kernel uses to map
SCSI device files to hardware.
