Are you logged in as root? If so, most screensavers will refuse to start. Read
Jamie Zawinski's site if you want to know why...

Subject: gimp and xscanimage: cannot find module char-major-81

I have a SCSI Microtek 35t slide scanner (connected to an Adaptec 2930
CU card) that I have used with GIMP and xscanimage for two years. I find
it no longer works under Linux. I have recently upgraded to RedHat 7 and
compiled kernel 2.4.1 (from 2.2.17). GIMP, sane and xsane are from the
RedHat 7 package. The other devices on the chain (a Microtek E6 scanner,
a 100 Meg Zip drive and a Yamaha CDROM writer work as before.
Furthermore, the scanner appears to be OK since it will scan properly
under Windows NT. (This is a dual-boot machine using NT boot loader. I
normally run NT in vmware under Linux, but can boot NT independently.)

When I attempt to access the scanner, /var/log/messages acquires the
message:

Apr 30 00:54:45 rdenney modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-81
Apr 30 00:54:45 rdenney last message repeated 4 times

*****Can anyone tell me how to tell what module char-major-81 is? This
error message does not occur when the other scanner on the chain (the E6
flatbed scanner) is accessed. (The latter works properly.)

I have made several changes to my system recently and only use my slide
scanner occasionally, so I frankly am not sure when this problem cropped
up. But I am ANNOYED!

You might want to go to the Linux Journal website. They're now
publishing an Embedded Linux magazine (for free, I think) and i would
suspect they may have some interesting resources available.

In SuSE it's located in /etc/rc.d/boot.local
This is where you enter commands to run at startup.
If I'm wrong, I'm SURE I'll hear about it here!

Interesting - I didn't have to do that. If I recall, doesn't that give
you a performance hit? Maybe we should compare configs to see if you can
get it to work without the "noapic".

I've had no problems with my LinkSys PCMLM56 combination ethernet 10/100 + 56K
modem card. Unlike some cards, it has no dongle cable to lose/break, since the
ethernet and modem ports are built in. Also, unlike the Xircom RealPort it
only takes 1 slot, but it does jut out of the slot, and can only be put in the
top slot if you are using 2 cards. The one downside is the card is not a
cardbus card, which means you will get a some less performance than you would
with a cardbus card.

Nope, I'm replying only to the newsgroups. If you can't spend a few days
browsing through the newsgroup, obviously getting the information isn't that
important to you.

Hi

Has anyone tried using the Canon IXUS 300 digital camera (I believe it
is the same as PowerShot 300 on the US market) with Linux? I know that
gPhoto (www.gphoto.org) supports IXUS, but I don't know if that includes
the newer IXUS 300?

Subject: Install freezes on RH 7.1 and Mandrake 8.0
From: Steve Bradtke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 21:03:36 GMT

I have a problem installing either RH 7.1 or Mandrake 8.0.

In either case, installation never really starts. I'm
allowed to choose installation mode, after which the initial
boot system is loaded from the CD ROM and the hardware
system is checked over. However, when it comes time for the
installation utility to come up, the system just hangs. For
example, in Mandrake 8.0 installation, I finally get a
message about drinking eggs and welcome to linux
mandrake. Then the system completely freezes. Selection of
any other installation mode, such as expert or rescue, all
lead to a freeze up at the same point.

I had no problems at all installing RH 7.0 or Mandrake 8.0
on the same system. I`m using an Abit VP6 dual processor
motherboard, with 2 P-III 800`s, 3 HDD`s (windows installed
on 1), a cdrom, and a cd-rw. Using an SB Live sound card,
and an Asus AGP-7100 graphics card.

On the theory that it might be useful, I've appended the dmesg
log from a successful boot into Mandrake 7.2

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve
