I had the free cd's from Linux Systems Labs shipped in and upgraded my
RedHat 7.0 system.
Printing no longer works, and I haven't chased down why yet.

I had the exact same experience!
I had installed Redhat 6.0, and the card was recognized, but when I ran
sndconfig, no sound. Redhat installs no less than 3 (!) volume control
applets under X: xmix(the generic X-window applet), gmix for Gnome and
kmix for KDE, and they interact, but xmixer seems to be the "boss". I
finally fiddled with xmixer, and bang--Linus said ". . .I pronounce
Linux as Leenoox."
Also, if your system has amplified speakers with a volume knob, set it
at about midrange.

The best luck with modems is get an external modem. Minimum amounts of
weirdness, easy to setup.

At work I have installed RH 7.0 on an old Compaq DP4000. This machine has a built in
ethernet card that appears to be based on the ThunderLan. We had problems with system
hangs during ftp access (total lock-up) so we got a plug-in 3Com card. We still have
these problems with the new card though. I have removed the module line for the old
card and also deloaded the USB (which was sharing the irq with the card). Any ideas
about this?

This is the reason why some hard drives (particularly SCSI where you are likely
to have lots of spindles) have an option to either wait n seconds before
spinning up or wait until the BIOS initiates the spin up. In the SCSI drives
I've seen, the wait n seconds is often based on the SCSI device ID (ie, drive
#0 would wait 5 seconds, drive #1 would wait 10 seconds, etc.).

Hey everybody,
I am trying to add a scsi tape (dat) to a dual processor RH7.0

The onboard scsi adapter is Adaptec aic-7899 ultra160 pci. It was not
configured since the disks are ide. I am trying to load the module for it
(aic7xxx.o) by running insmod
=============================
/sbin/insmod aic7xxx
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-22smp/scsi/aic7xxx.o
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22smp/scsi/aic7xxx.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
inva
lid IO or IRQ parameters
=============================
Any idea what parameters I need for the adapter module to work!

Are you sure that the module isn't loaded already? On every RH box I've
installed, if there's a controller, the module is loaded regardless of
whether or not anything is actually hooked to the controller. You can
list loaded modules via 'lsmod'.

Subject: Adaptec AHA1920B and aic7xxx module
Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 18:45:02 +0200
I have an Adaptec AHA-1920B controller with two CD-ROM drives and a DAT
tape drive connected to it, but i am experiencing some problems with
them. I have previously installed Redhat 7.0 without problems, but as I
recently attempted to install Debian 2.2r3 the installation crashed when
I tried to install the aic7xxx module. I had the same problem when I
tried compiling the 2.4.3 kernel under Redhat 7.0 --- upon succesfully
compiling the system hang during reboot right after detecting the SCSI
adapter. I am running Win ME too, and it also has problems with my SCSI
controller (hangs during boot), so I simply disabled the device here.
However, Win2K seems to have no problems, which is the part that really
mystifies me... Of course I have checked whether everything was
connected properly and terminated correctly and that seems to be the
case.
My motherboard (ASUS) has a Promise ATA controller using IRQ 10, which
apparently is the same IRQ used by my SCSI controller (according to
/proc/pci under Redhat). But in Win2K the control panel tells me that
the SCSI controller is using IRQ 9!!!
Could the IRQ conflict be the problem? Can I give any parameters to the
aic7xxx module to force it to use another IRQ?
When I was experimenting with the 2.4.3 kernel, I did try to changed the
IRQ of the SCSI controller to 9 (with Adaptecs SCSI select utility) but
that did not solve the problem (much to my surprise, really).
I hope somebody out there can help me as I am getting quite frustrated.
Regards
Morten

Have Red Hat Linux 6.1, printer works fine on Windows.
The printtool even suggests a filter for Oki 4w

Give us some more detail.... like the messages from the kernel, and the

Subject: EFA E5TX-AT Motherboard Spontaneously Reboots When Probed

I have been pulling my hair out for a couple weeks now over this problem. I
know the Linux Hardware HOW-TO mentions this motherboard specifically and
says that this problem is "solvable" by updating the BIOS to v1.01. Then
link however sends you to the EFA website where 1.03 is the most current
BIOS version and the BIOS on my board is 1.02. I flashed the BIOS with 1.03
.... still problems.
I noticed the problem when I upgraded my network card to a Netgear FA311 PCI
card. I could get the network up fine after compiling the driver for that
card and could transfer files TO the E5TX-AT box (running RedHat 7.0) but
transfering files FROM this box to other computers on my network would cause
the E5TX-AT box to immediately reboot. I tried another PCI network card
that uses the tulip.o driver with the same results. Here is the catch when
I put an ISA network card back in the box it works fine....although at
10mbps.
I have traded emails with EFA support but they act as if this was the first
time they have heard of the problem. I have also tried to upgrade the box
to RedHat 7.1 just to see if it helps and I can't get through the
installation/upgrade before the box crashes and reboots (both in a text mode
and graphical mode install.
I know this is old technology but it would be nice to get it up and running
anyway. If anybody has had similar problems with the EFA E5TX-AT
motherboard I would appreciate a shout.
