(Note, I work on GCC, not on Linux, so take what I say about Linux as being
personal opinions).

Assuming you built the USB controller as a module, I believe what you want to
do is edit /etc/modules.conf (it might be under the old name of
/etc/conf.modules) and delete the following line:

        alias usb-controller usb-ohci

That would allow you to still load the USB controller by hand, using modprobe.
If you have compiled the USB controller directly into the kernel, you will have
to rebuild the kernel with the USB support either compiled as modules, or not
compiled at all. You probably should remove the lines that refer to the zip
drive from /etc/fstab if they exist.

Ok, at first I had a dell powersupply, so that of _course_ didn't
work. But later I tried again with a real ATX powersupply, and that
still didn't work.

I also tried shorting out the power switch connector with a bent
paperclip, and that didn't start anything up.

So I got a new motherboard, cpu, case and PS without much regret. I'm
running much faster, and it only set me back about $260.

<I'm inclined to say it's the motherboard. The board will power up
<without a CPU, it'll just beep at you. Since you're talking about
<having SIMMs, I'd say it's time for you to just get a new computer.

My mistake. It's pretty contemporary memory - a mix of pc100 and
pc133, mostly pc133. When I moved to the new motherboard, I tossed
the pc100 and kept the pc133.

<I would guess that what happened is when you were changing your drive
<you sparked and fried the motherboard with some static. Did you have
<the P/S unplugged when you were in the case, or just off? You're
<supposed to only have it off so that the case is still grounded. (But
<you're also supposed to wear an anti-static wrist strap, which I've
<never seen anyone actually do.)

I had the PS plugged into the wall while doing the initial cdrom work,
but I wasn't using an antistatic wrap.

You can bet that when I did the work of switching over to the new
parts, that I used an antistatic wrap!

So now I'm mostly up and running, but I'm having a little trouble with
the sound on the machine. I plan to start a new thread about that
later.

Thanks much to all who replied.

I purchased a 3Com HomeConnect USB webcam last year because it was
touted as one of the best and you could get a pack of different lenses
for it.

So, I unplug it from my Win98 laptop and plug it into my Linux box
running RHL7.1 and this is what I get in /var/log/messages:

May 7 16:16:33 yakisoba kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned
device number 2
May 7 16:16:33 yakisoba kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x4c1/0x9d) is not
claimed by any active driver.
May 7 16:16:33 yakisoba /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: ... no drivers for USB product
4c1/9d/106

So, does anyone know if this cam is supported? Is there a driver
out there somewhere?

Nice. I'll look at it. I finally got through to the arkeia.

I am tring to get linux up and running with two eexpress ISA cards irq 5
and 9 io 270 and 300 respectively. during RH 6.2 installation neither card
is detected i tried using netconfig two set them up. No dice on either card.
RH 5.2 installation gets one card but not the other. I tried this multiple
times and it will work with either card but only one. Then in 5.2 I try
adding it myself by modifying /etc/conf.modules and adding all the info.
Then I modified lilo.conf and ran lilo like some multi-nic web page said to.
The problem when I do ifconfig eth1 it says unknown interface. In a nutshell
my question is ho do I get ifconfig to acknoledge eth1 ??? PLEASE HELP!!

Try using es1371.o if it exists in RH6.1
midi probably won't work - that sndcard uses software midi table(s).

There are (were?) other posts here regarding the SB16 PCI card.

Have you looked at man isapnp?

<Sigh> (This is getting long) They're standard On/Off, Reset
switches you see on any half decent case. InWin cases happen
to be on of the better brand of cases. I have an identical
case with an Asus board, P-166 and LM7.1. No problems on reboot.

Yes, it completes, then _only_ cycling the power
by means of the power switch on the power supply can bring
the system back up. And that's the problem, why doesn't "reboot"
reboot? I'm not doing a shutdown -h now.

I'm happy with my Asus AV7133-RAID. I am not using and
don't need RAID, but it was the same price sans RAID
at the computer show. I have RH 7.0 and Win98 on the box
