I have an Adaptec RAID controller AIC 7815. Is this supported under
Mandrake 8 and kernel 2.4?
Thank you very much,
Michael

If the program you are trying to compile is an X program (which I assume it
is) then you need to install the X development libraries, which consists of
the libraries, headers, and documentation. In my case on RedHat 7.1 I
install the:
XFree86-devel-4.0.3-5.i386.rpm

Thanks to everybody who responded to my inquiry. The status quo is as follows:
1) According to David Hinds, my problems with the PCM card are actually due to a
bug in the
2.4 kernel. Apparently, this bug was not present in the 2.2 kernel (which might
explain why
the card is working under RH7.0, but not 7.1).
2) I was about to "downgrade" to 2.2, when Jerry McBride indicated that he could
get the card
to work with the 2.4.4 kernel (my RH7.1 has 2.4.2). Does this mean that the bug has
been fixed
in 2.4.4 (David Hinds said that Linux is still working on this problem)?
Incidentally, a response from the Red Hat technical support was:
Thank you for writing Red Hat Installation support.
Undortunately, due to the proprietary nature of laptops we cannot fully support
your case. Waht we can do for you is point you to a link where you can get some
helpful information.

Hi,
I have just bought a new motherboard and processor - Athlon 900. I bought
128 RAM to go into it too. I still have the old slower RAM - 128SIMM and
2x32DIMM from my old PII233 that will fit in the board - (alongside the new
128DIMM).
Can anyone tell me if putting in the old RAM will slow up the system, and
hence the new RAM won't operate at its maximum speed - or - will the system
be faster by having lots more memory?
Thanks in advance,
John

ls -l /dev/st0 should return
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 Jul 29 2000 /dev/st0
If it does, then /dev/st0 is present. If not, then
man mknod
grep st0 /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt (will tell you the
device numbers for st0 and nst0)
...and viola. However, you should make sure that SCSI tape support is
getting loaded. After you attempt to read or write to /dev/st0, the st
module should show up in the output of "lsmod". If it doesn't, then
load the module and fix up your /etc/modules.conf .

Get something, anything, other than 2.4.2, now. There are some serious
data corruption problems with VIA chipsets in 2.4.2 (well, actually, there
still are problems, but the most ridiculous problems seem to be fixed).
Especially if you have a Samsung hard drive, do not wait! I watched my
file system decompose and become useless twice before I finally checked
the kernel list and found out. You may not have such bad luck, bu tit
still isn't a bad idea to upgrade.

The only time I've seen this happen is when I've burned a multisession
CD incorrectly (bad options to mkisofs, etc.) If the CD-writing
software used doesn't close the session properly, weird things could
happen, including not being able to see all the sessions. Some
commercial CD-writing software is of... questionable quality, and may do
that.
I have heard that Joliet extensions are not quite compatible with
multi-session CDs, but am not sure whether to believe it or not.
(experiment coming up later on...) I have also noticed that many CD-RWs
will not recognize a session you've just burned unless you eject the CD
and re-insert it.
Kernel 2.4.3, eh? What does kernel 2.2.x do?

Hello,
Before I buy the AV7133 I want to check w/ those who have those who have
it who have said it works fine and those that have been having problems w/
it on this group.
I know some problems seem to be due to IDE drives and the ata/100 mode..
Are those of you who aren't having problems using scsi or have dma
disabled? I'm using an older smaller capacity scsi drive but also
considered getting a newer & larger ibm ide ata/100 drive but obviously
won't buy one if the mobo isn't gonna support it =).
So if someone could give a summary or describe what setup was working
flawlessy, that would be great. (As well as what setup definately doesn't
work) I've been searching the group and am not 100% clear on what's
working well.
Thanks,

Do you mean the A7V133? If that is correct my system works well with
ata100 drives.
There appears to be a famous southbridge 686 ide bug, but bios
revisions and other changes appear to have corrected this problem. I
have not seen this problem myself and it only occurs under certain
conditions.
Hope this helps.

Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 03:40:26 +0200
I've got an ELSA Microlink 56k USB modem and would like to use it with my
Redhat 7.1. I've checked several sources of information about it and now I
know I can use it on Linux, because it supports ACM.The problem is that I'm
quite new to Linux and need help to configure it properly.
Someone told me to read a file at /usr/src/linux/documentacion/usb/acm.txt
(I think it was that file, as you can imagine, I'm writting this under
Windows). I've read it and have found that the modules the file says I must
have running are indeed loaded, but I can't understand the rest of the
explanation. It says something about using devfs (/dev file system support),
because the driver uses it to create a virtual device for the modem. Should
I recompile the kernel? Is there a way I can setup the modem without
recompiling the kernel?
If someone with the same or similar modem has been able to set it up, I
would appreciate his/her help and maybe an explanation on the steps to take.
Thanks in advance.

After installing the scsi card, Redhat's hardware detection facility
pops up a message (at boot time) identifying the card type, and gives me
the choice to configure it or not; I say yes; it continues with
the boot.
Later on I see a message like this in /var/log/messages:
May 7 08:52:44 linux04 kudzu: aliased scsi_hostadapter as ncr53c8xx
May 7 08:52:44 linux04 kudzu: succeeded
(Later on, if I remove the card and reboot, Redhat's hardware detection
facility again (at boot time) notifies me that the hardware is no longer
present. So not only the addition of the scsi card, but also its
removal, is detected by Redhat Linux at boot time.)
I downloaded and installed a program called 'scsiadd' that allows scsi
devices to be added and removed without booting. I can use 'scsiadd -s'
and it will indicate that the scsi host adaptor is present, and then it
scans a large number of units and concludes by saying that no devices
were found.
IF no scsi host adaptor is present at all, then scsiadd -s' immediatley
exits with 'Attached devices: none' and does not scan all the
unit numbers.
So I am assuming that something is being found when the scsi host
adaptor is installed.

Since Redhat's hardware detection software is already detecting the card
at boot time, and allegedly configuring it, do I really need to take
additional steps to load a driver for it?

I am assuming that SCSI disk support is enabled, because at boot time,
if the SCSI adaptor was recently installed, Redhat's hardware detection
software identifies it and allows me to select a button to configure it.
Likewise, if the card is remove and the machine rebooted, I get a
similar screen saying that the hardware is no longer present.
I haven't taken any specific steps to include SCSI disk support in the
kernel. If SCSI disk support were not in the kernel, would I see a
question at boot time asking me whether or not to configure the scsi
card?

Subject: Strange Mylex BT-958 host adapter problem (firmware?)
Hi all,
I have 2 Mylex BT-958 host adapters, one with firmware Revision G and
the other with firmware Revision A. Both have a hard disk connected to
them and active termination at the end of an internal 68-pin cable.
My problem is that the host adapter with the older firmware (Rev. A)
cannot negotiate anything other than an async connection. The one with
the newer firmware (Rev. G) can handshake at 40 Mb/s when the requested
rate it set to 40 Mb/s with either disk.
The hard disks are an older IBM UW 9LP and a new IBM U160 36LP. I have
jumpered the 36LP to run in SE mode and enabled term power, with no
changes or improvements in the handshake with the older adapter.
I have tweaked the older adapter's configuration to be just like the
Rev. G's and this has not resulted in any change: no matter the
requested rate, from 10 to 40 Mb/s, the older adapter will not handshake
at anything other than async. This includes either of the canned setup
profiles, the factory default or the "performance" configuration.
I have switched cables with no effect on the problem. I have reconnected
both hard drives to the other controller, to see if it was a problem
with a hard drive. No matter what the hardware configuration, the host
adapter with the older firmware (Rev. A) stays set to an async
handshake. The newer adapter can handshake at 40 Mb/s with either hard
disk.
I have removed both host adapters and looked for jumpers. There is one,
on the lower left quadrant on the front of each adapter that the manual
does not identify. Both adapters have this jumper installed. There
appear to be no other hardware configuration options for either card.
It looks like the adapter with the older firmware has a problem. Any
ideas on how to solve it???
Thanking you,
