I'm using a WD200BB and after enabling udma I get 150+mbs buffer-cache
reads and 30+mbs buffered reads. This WD drive is similar to the IBM you are
considering. If you are going to use an internal PCI modem then I would
get the USR 2977/2976. I am using a 700mhz Duron unmodified and am
able to run it at 728mhz (104x7) and still have the BIOS optimized. I have
not changed the BIOS but I did back it up to diskette. I am happy with
the m/b. It runs win98se and RH7.0 ( 2.2.16-22 kernel)

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I would like to know what DVD writers/players + CD writers/players
(4 in one) work best with Linux and what the current price on these
items is. All recommendation are greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Got $5000 for a dvd writer? You might as well just shove it in a windows box
and decidate that computer for the task.

Keep in mind that dual layer writing isn't available yet under 6 figures.

i use suse 7.1 so i'm not familiar with the mandrake hardware installation
tools; try running wvdial in a terminal and see if it detects the modem. i
had to disable a com port in my bios to get my modem to work in the factory
configured default seeting. anyway i can suggest a cheap modem; either a
powercom 56k isa or an aopen fm56-itu/2 isa. both around 40 dollars. the
powercom is an x2 model, the aopen a k56flex. both are good. i bought the
aopen off the myaopen.com website, the powercom locally in a computer
store./phil

Can't say this for certain, but that seems like a SCSI controller, not
a RAID controller. AIC = Adaptec Integrated Controller, i.e., onboard
(or the chipset on an adapter card).

That said, there's a driver called aic7xxx, so I'd assume there's
support.

Works great with kernel 2.4.4 and kernel 2.2.19. Currently using 2.4.4
with Atlon setting for the cpu. No problems here.

Good luck.

It is a question of whether the USB patch was applied to your kernel. I
know that Redhat 7.0, Suse 7.0, and Mandrake 7.2 have the USB patch. The
2.4.x kernels have USB built in. As for printcap, you simply have to
change the lines in printcap that go something like

             /dev/lp0

to something like
             /dev/usb/lp0

It may be /dev/usblp0 in some distributions. You will be able to see
which it is by looking for /dev/... on your system

Why not flash the latest bios for the adapter? This adapter should

there are a few different types of DVD writers (dvd-r, dvd-ram, etc.),
some are more than others. Some cost only $500, others are indeed around
$5000

I don't see this. I can copy an entire CDROM to my hard drive without error,
and they are both masters on the two IDE controllers.

I have the Asus A7V133 motherboard and am very happy with it. I have a
WD 30 GB ATA-100 drive connected to the IDE controller and get 32 MByte/sec
(hdparm -Tt /dev/hd?); dma is of course enabled. I use an 800 MHZ
Athlon/Thunderbird.

Right now I'm using RedHat 7.0, Kernel 2.2.16-22. I plan to upgrade to
7.1 (kernel 2.4.2) soon....

I am having problems installing a tape drive to my Linux Red Hat 6.2 server.
When I boot the machine I see:

Vendor: SEAGATE Model: DAT 04106-XXX Rev: 735B
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

But when the system boots I get the following when I try to access the file:

mt -f /dev/st0 status
/dev/st0: No such device

This is the second tape drive that I have installed in this machine to get
it running. How do I get my system to see this tape drive?

Has anybody had any luck getting gphoto2 to work with an

gPhoto2 claims to support the camera, but I get an I/O error when the
thing tries to initialize. What do I need to build into the kernal in

When I've got the camera plugged into the USB and turned on, when I cat
/proc/bus/usb/devices, there are long delays in the output. I don't get
those kinds of delays with my USB printer.

Any suggestions anybody could offer would be greatly appreciated.

 Hi All,

Installing RedHat 7.1 with a nVidia GeFOrce Ultra 2 DDR - AGP

Well I am having problems with the booting
and installation from the install CDs.

Hardware config includes a nVidia GeForce Ultra 2 (64Meg)
AGP [DDR] card and booting is fine selecting country code

The SAME hardware, but with the TNT2-32Meg AGP card proceeds
 fine and installation runs fine...

Any clues out there to get passed this problem.

I have tried all install oprions from boot: prompt and
ALL stall at effectively the same point...
