I am looking at getting a better graphics card for my Linux box ( currently
runnibg Mandrake 8 ). Have been looking at a couple of ATI cards (Rage Fury
Prp and Xpert 2000 128). Are these any good?? Just need something that
will work well for some possible light gaming. I am currently running a ATI
3D Charger 8MB, just want something with a bit more meat. Let me know whaat
you think. Thanks.

ummm.....quite a lot of them, actually.

you have to change the line in the first page of the bios that says "halt
on"
and change to so that it halts on nothing....then it will happily boot
without keyboard & video...

Yes very true, my only solution to this problem was to install just an
old crappy card... and at the time I got my hands on an ISA one, so I
installed that.

Box is headless, but if I do need to use vga I can by putting on a
monitor.

YOu don't say if you want to do 3d/opengl type gaming or just 2d stuff.
You probably won't see much of an improvement with the 2d stuff.

Checkout www.linux3d.org for a good discussion of 3d stuff for linux.

I got linux to recongize my datachute-pci card adatper. When I insert my adaptec
Slimscsi card I get the following error.
initializing socket 0
unsupported card in socket 0
cs: no valid ROM images found!
That is weird because when I check the /etc/pcmcia/config file I see the device
listed

card "Adaptec APA-1480 SCSI Host Adapter"
 manfid 0x012f, 0xcb01
 bind "apa1480_cb"

There is a

apa1480_cb later on in the file

device "apa1480_cb"
 class "scsi" module "cb_enabler", "apa1480_cb"

Is there a special .dat file that I need in
/etc/pcmcia/cis ?

At least linux did not reboot in a infinit boot loop like windows 2000
professional did. Folks said 2000 was stable, they are wrong. The first day I
installed it, I got a machine check, system info (without a network device)
locked up the machine.

Avoid any card with the Rage 128 PF chipset on it -- its XFree 4
driver has a bug where black pixels are sometimes dropped.

Speaking from experience :-(

I disagree with them - but that depends on one's idea of "driver".

The answer depends on your notion of "driver". In fact, you need two
provisions in Linux (as well as in other Unices, too) :
1.The binary "driver" proper in the kernel, or as loadable module, that
is the kernel code to communicate with the device via SCSI IOCTLs. This
module is called "st.o", is available & can be loaded into the kernel
by default on ALL distros I've seen so far.
2.One or more device files in /dev as interface(s) between the driver
and the device. These are /dev/st0 for the first/only SCSI tape drive,
rewinding on close, and /dev/nst0 for the non-rewinding access.
These files also are availabe by default on all distros.
BTW : The st driver is fairly generic, supposed to work with almost any
SCSI tape drive, your SDT-5000 as well as my SDT-9000, other 4mm DDS,
QIC, AIT, VXA, changers, etc. pp.
Check for these two items, please - or feel free to copmile a custom
kernel with general SCSI support, support for your host adapter and
SCSI tape support - regardless if modular or static.
Next - the user commands : "mt" is the command to control the drive,
that is rewinding, seeking, ejecting etc., while you use the tools
of your choice to create and restore archives : e.g. tar, cpio, dd,
dump, or others. Please read the documentation for these tools,
and you should be set for backing up and restoring.
Unfortunately, there's no general "TAPE-HOWTO" (yet), I admit -
I've thought already of writing one, but haven't found time yet...

Should be 34 pins in floppy cables, isn't it ?
And I thought, there always has to be some twisted wires to indicate
the first drive ?
But anyway, to the OP: Unfortunately I can't find the OP on my
news server. Could you summarize (in short) your problem again,
please ? - TIA.
Now, can't you simply plug in your drive to the second floppy
connector, perhaps by help of a male-female adapter ?
AFAIK, the conn. for drive "B" in DOS speak is the one _nearer_
to the controller.
What's the problem ? Recognizing the drive by the ftape module(s)?
Maybe there's a jumper to designate 1st or 2nd drive, or
"cable select" ? Maybe play with that, if applicable.
What happens if you unplug your floppy, and plug the tape drive
to the 1st connector ?
Maybe exchange floppy cables by one from another box, or a
friend ?
Just guessing, as I don't know exactly what the problem is
all about - sorry...

The one question not answered is "how did you partition the drive"

If you haven't tried it already make a small partition at the beginning of
the drive (10 megs or so) and then make your linux swap / linux native
partitions. You may be coming up against the limitations on physical size
in the first partition.

I have successfully installed RedHat 7.0 on a Seagate 20 gb using this
arangement

Depends on the board/driver combination.
I recommend you leave PCI1 (INTA - shared with AGP slot) and PCI2 (INTB
- shared with onboard Promise ATA controller) empty, put the TV card in
PCI3 (INTC) and put the NIC & sound card in slots PCI4 and PCI5 (INTD -
shared with USB). In this way, you have all devices that consume a lot
of bandwith & generate a lot of interrupts on different IRQs. The low
bandwith devices can share interrupts.

Take a look at the Nvidia GeForce2 MX cards that are being
marked down now because of the release of the GeForce3 series.

Good prices, and these are excellent 2D cards also..I'm using the
LeadTec Geforce2 MX DX Pro...a fine card in both 2D and 3D...
prices are coming down...look at others also...Very small print
is excellent on my card. The default Nvidia driver in 8.0 works
great...as did the 7.2 drivers. If you're a big gamer you might
want to download one of the many Nvidia drivers available for
Linux. I'm able to see some flaws in marginal fonts...things
that I though was card related are actually font related!

The Leadtec card seems designed for the gamer rather than
the 2D crowd...but, I discovered it is great in 2D to me. You
might look at the Radeon VE series by ATI....its much less
expensive and is rumored to be very good at 2D also...however,
I'm not sure about their drivers on Linux..yet! The VE series
has DVI outlets for pure-digital input to flat-panel monitors.
A real plus for the future. Sharp, crisp images! The DVI
format has been selected as a standard now. Perhaps
someone on this forum can discuss this new VE card.
The DVI plugs are not on the Leadtec MX pro card.

Anyway, good luck...

Leonard...

It's not a problem as long as I use X and stay like that. But if I use a

Anyone know what to do ? Is it possible to avoid using the virtual frame

I recently got a Asus P2L97-DS motherboard with dual

 - It works with kernel 2.2.15 or 2.2.17 with no problem (except under
Xfree but ...)
but when I tried to get a 2.4 kernel to work (2.4.0, 2.4.2, 2.4.4,
2.4.4-ac9) It crashes
at booot time with a kernel oops saying the "process swapper tried to

I've tried the "noapic" option and different copilation options
(with/out mtrr , with/out ACPI &apm .....)
and nothing made a difference. I was suprised too to see that the 2.2.19
of the mandrake distribution
hangs in the same way.
I tried to upgrade the bios: I've now 1008 version. I tried different
compilers (egcs gcc ) to see if it
would solve the problem but with no success .
    Has anyone an Idea ?

- With working 2.2, the mouse is misfunctioning in XFree 4.0.3 (the
3.3.6 make the same errors) and
in some desktop such as KDE it crashes about 5sec after the launch. Are
there options for the X server
or is it a bug .... (I've a MilleniumII (Pci))

If it can help someone to find an idea , i've tried win2k too and it
crashes at boot time saying
SMP_CONFUGURATION_NOT_SUPPORTED ................. and yet the card works
with
a 2.2 kernel ans was previously working with a old Redhat 5.? very good
(also under X)

thank you by advance

None are required for any SCSI tape drive (even that bastardized OnStream,
and that's only different 'cause they f*cked up the protocol).

"/dev/st0" is all you need.

I know, it's around $80. Now, you said "probably". Do you (or
anybody else) know for sure?

I have been suffering such a problem until 30 minutes ago.

Under RH 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 and 7.0 I could not get the the printer to work properly from
the 2nd page on. The text appeared aligned to
the top of the paper. Finally I remembered that my printer (Nec Pinwriter P60) has a
menu to set the Form Length. It was set at
11", and I use A4 forms, so I changed to 11 2/3" and now its works fine. At home I
have been using a HP4L without problems, may be
because it was properly "tuned" from the begining to A4 forms.

Hope it works for you. Please let me know.
