Successful! :)

Something wrong with kernel patches for AIC7xxx module in RedHat Linux
7.1
At least, something wrong with loading the module.

I made a new ISO file which is work pretty well. I commented out all(5
files)
patches for aic7xxx modules and rebuild kernel rpm file. And I
inserted new rpm file into RedHat Linux 7.1

If you're in similar situation with me, mail me and I'll send you the
ISO
file I made. Only what I did in it is update kernel rpm file.

 - Brian,.

ps. ISO file is too big to serve in my FTP.

any external modem which connects via a serial cable (rs232c) will
work well with linux, windows, and nearly anything else including dumb
terminals, macintoshes, old suns.

plus you get Das Blinkenlights!

I am wondering if anyone can point me to info regarding AGP. For example,
would RedHat normally have support compiled into the kernal or is the
support completely dependant on the video driver used for the video card.
And would there be any real differance between Disabled AGP and 4x AGP in
Linux?

Yes. In my experience, when they work, they're much more sensitive to
line conditions than Real Modems, and slower in their transmission
speeds.

>Question #1) Should I keep my winmodem and use it and save alot of
>bread, or should I go for a new modem?

$50 for an external is a lot of bread? Well, if you're a starving
college student... but that's what E-Bay and the Property Disposition
unit of your local college are for.

>Questions #2) Is the following modem a good choice for linux? If not,
>can I get some recomendations?
> US Robotics 56K V.90 PCI DATA/FAX INTERNAL MODEM

Not enough information. Manufacturers are very cagey about whether
their products are Real Modems or LoseModems. It's always a crapshoot
with internal modems, *unless* the box copy states "DOS compatible" or
"Linux compatible". If you could find more information, like the
exact make+model number, there's a page at http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/
that can help you out.

"Find an external modem that plugs into the 9-pin serial port" is very
good advice; you can't go wrong there.

If you are dead set on getting your current LoseModem working, do a "cat
/proc/pci" and make sure that the LoseModem was made by Lucent. Those
can work; you have probably already come across
http://www.walbran.org/sean/linux/stodolsk/ in your searches. Works
reasonably well for me and the LoseModem on my Thinkpad 600X. HTH,

Does it work if you use 2x AGP instead of 4x? 4x can be flakey on a lot of
systems - I know people who have had to crawl back to 1x to get a properly
stable system.

I currently have an SB Live! and that is the very reason why I am looking
to buy a new card... it's giving me hell with its crackling and frequent
sound dropouts. Apparently this is a very widely known problem, and in
most cases, is unfixable (especially when using it on a motherboard with
a VIA chipset, like I am).

My main priority is in getting a *clean* sound. The subtler aspects of
audio fidelity are secondary in comparison to this, but still very
important to me.

So which sound card should I get which *is* properly supported under Linux,
and will give good audio fidelity, and *no crackling*???

I don't think we have the same chipset. lspci shows the following:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C691 [Apollo PRO]
(rev c4)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C598/694x
[Apollo MVP3/Pro133x AGP]
00:07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C596 ISA [Mobile South]
(rev 23)
00:07.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. Bus Master IDE (rev 10)
00:07.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. UHCI USB (rev 11)
00:07.3 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C596 Power Management
(rev 30)
00:11.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL-8029(AS)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G200 AGP
(rev 01)

So it looks like this chipset (VIA Apollo Pro 133A) is completely
unsupported, which I find pretty surprising.

Ah ha! There's your issue. In RH's tetex's dvips (got that?), the
default paper size is set to A4. To fix that, run 'texconfig', go into
the dvips configuration, and set the default paper size to be Letter.

Subject: Re: Help with Ftape / T3000 drive
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Allan R. Batteiger)
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 14:37:55 GMT

T3000 Tape drive problem.
My mistake about the 40 pins, floppy is 34. I have been
working with an IDE drive that has been giving me problems.

To summarize: I am trying to get a T3000 floppy interface tape
drive to work with RH 7.0. I have hooked it to the floppy cable
both with and without the floppy attached. When I attempt to
execute a tape rewind I am told there is no device present. I
have verified that the ftape modules are loaded and the devices
exist in the /dev dir. When the floppy is connected to the cable
the tape rewind causes a floppy access. It is as if the ftape
module is not doing a proper select on the drive. Unfortunately
I have not had the time to dig through the sources of ftape to
attempt to understand how it works.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
