Linux can access up to 4G of process space per process, however, if
you CPU supports PAE and the kernel is compiled to support it, you
can access up to 64G with 4G per process, as is my understanding.
I *think* that most pentium-pro on up processors support PAE modes.
There is another recent thread around there which talks about this
a little.

HI ALL
Here's my problem:
1. I have files on a Windows 2000 platform. I want to be able to have my
employees download these files via secure FTP from anywhere on the NET.
2. I have a Linux Red Hat 7.0 computer acting as my router. IPCHAINS and
ipmasqadm
3. I've got openssh server installed as well. (that's the as far as I got,
I'm still a newbie)
Questions:
1. Do I need SAMBA?
2. Does anyone know if there's any good windows openssh clients?
3. Where do I go from here?

No, but it is wasteful, particularly on a laptop.

??? I have 2.6 for Intel and Sparc, in the box, bought direct from Sun
for about $10 a few years ago.
Not totally free, but cheap enough for personal use.

Hi,
I am having problems getting my sidewinder gamepad to work unde LM 8.0
with the 2.4 kernel. I hear that joystick support has changed btw 2.2
and 2.4, but I think I am having trouble with the gameport. By default,
the port is inactive according to cat /proc/isapnp, and I can change it
to report the gameport as active by using isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf (I only
uncommented the settings for the gameport in the isapnp.conf). This
seems to work. I then use 'modprobe sidewinder', which loads the
input, gameport and sidewinder modules. I also ran 'modprobe joydev' to
no effect. here is lsmod:
Module Size Used by
joydev 5824 0 (unused)

Am I missing something? Is there a specific module for the awe gameport?

Define "Best". Really. Video: Best 2D performance regardless of
price? Best 3D performance regardless of price/setup hassles? Best
price/performance ratio? Sound: best price/performance/ease of setup?
No one can answer your question unless you define your terms.
That said, go with the ATi Xpert9x for cheap and reasonably good 2D video,
the nVidia GeForce something-or-other for 3D (using the evil binary-only
drivers), and the Matrox G400 for great 2D. Use the Ensoniq AudioPCI
(aka ES1371) for cheap+reasonable sound, and the SB Live! for more
expensive but better sound.

Netmeisters,
Compaq is currently selling DVD-R drives for about $600 with their
Presario desktops. This is very appealing, considering that Dirt Cheap
Drives sells only one DVD-R drive, for $4159. Apparently the two
drives are similar (both made by Pioneer, anyway). Compaq's has an
IDE interface (apparently; phone rep wasn't too sure), whereas the
other one is SCSI.
My question is, has anyone tried to use Linux with Compaq's drive?
Is it supported at all (as a CD reader? CD burner? DVD reader? DVD
burner?) My assumption is that you can't burn DVD's under Linux, but
maybe that's not correct.
Thanks in advance for the info,

I'm not surprised at all. I've worked with lots of Alpha systems used
as a database box. Bluntly put, they stink at this. On the other hand,
what little we got to do as far as raw CPU processing went, they screamed.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, keep the Alpha for scientific computing
(floating point especially) and use Spark or PA/RISK? for your big
databases.

[ Followups to comp.os.linux.misc ]
This afternoon I was "hit" by a telemarketing call trying to inform me
about a "Wonderful new vacation 'web site". In spite of numerous
requests, the caller refused to hang up, so I finally did, but I'd like
to reduce the odds of dealing with these calls in the future.
I know there are special projects that use a cut-down Linux box as a
network router. Is anyone aware of any similar project aimed at
creating a Linux-based single-line answering machine?
Worded another way, what is the minimal Linux machine configuration that
can be used as an answering machine? I've seen a couple of posts
mentioning using mgetty and vgetty, but I haven't been able to find out
just how much horsepower these require. I have a couple of Dell
486DX2-66 boxes in the basement that I think I could get running with
perhaps 16Mb of RAM each; would these be fast enough to handle an
internal voice+FAX+data modem? How about an external voice+FAX+data
modem such as the AOpen FM56EX/2?
Assuming I have (or can get cheaply) the hardware I need, I'd like to
set it up as follows, triggered off Caller ID ANI:
- ANI unavailable: Don't ring phone, but play recorded message and
accept incoming message.
- ANI on "good" list (MY friends & family (;-)): Ring phone. If not
picked up, play a custom recorded message (keyed by ANI) and accept
an incoming message
- ANI on "bad" list: Don't ring phone. Play recorded message and accept
incoming message.
- ANI not on list: Ring phone(?). If not picked up, play recorded
message and accept incoming message.
Actually, I'd _like_ to check the ANI text for a "telemarketer" flag,
but that feature doesn't seem to be supported locally. (;-)
Okay, it'll be big and bulky, it won't run if the power is out, and I
may need to have it post messages to my office machine over the LAN, but
I'd at least be able to customize the ruleset and modify the good and
bad lists as neded.
1) How big a box will I need to do this with?
2) Is there a 'web site where this (and related information) has
already been collected (e.g. www.linux-pbx.com?)
I'm not going to start this for at least a couple of weeks (several
other things currently have higher priority), but I thought I'd ask
around before beating myself bloody on this. Any hints, comments, or
suggestions will be appreciated.

I'm using that motherboard with a Duron 800 and having no problems.
First of all, could you list all the hardware you're using, and what
makes you think it's a motherboard problem? In particular, what kind of
power supply do you have? What kind of memory (what brand)? A Thunderbird
850 needs a high quality power supply. Poor quality memory can also be a
problem with Athlons, though I have heard that this particular motherboard is
relatively tolerant.
Incidentally, the "RAID" thing is build into the SUSE default kernel.
Most vendor include as much as possible in the kernel so that anyone can
install it successfully (i.e. for maximum hardware support). It doesn't (or
shouldn't) actually do anything to your system. Also, MMX is present in most
modern x86 CPUs, including Intel, AMD and Via/Cyrix CPUs.
