Hi,
you can try primax.soucefourge.net or
http://thor.prohosting.com/~chrordig/
there are some user space drivers for Primax Scanners.

As titled, I'm installing a Dell GX150 and I just can't get it right!
CPU PIII 866
256 MB RAM
40 GB HDD (Seagate I believe)
on board NIC(3 COM)
I've installed smoothly, but it just doesn't boot at all .

Budget would be less the $500, but the cheaper the better. As for this
idea, it sounds great, what's the URL?

You can find good information about the setup of your scanner at:
www.mostang.com/sane .

Look in /var/log/dmesg, where you should see what device your scanner has
(/dev/sgb ?). You must have this to get the scanner working.

If /dev/sgb is there your problem might be that you have not created a
symbolic link:
ln -s /dev/sgb /dev/scanner

You must also perhaps edit the conf file for your scanner to get Sane
working correctly.

Hello,

I am using MD8.0 and have been trying to get a visor to work with it. It
has a usb cradle.
I have done a search via google, and found the howto on getting the palm
and visor to supposedly work. I followed what it told me to do, but
maybe I missed something. I still cannot get it to work. Is there
someone who can give me idea's on what to do?. I'm afraid I am not very
knowledged in linux, however I have gotten my creative webcam to work.

I seem to be getting a error that tells me it cannot access /dev/visor,
it does not show up in the menu, when looking at harddrake, I do know
that the bus is OHCI.

System: AMD k6/2-400, 196megs,6gig hardrive
OS: Mandrake 8.0

If there is any information you need to further help in a answer, please
let me know

Thanks and may GOD bless you richly

I had picked up a 30gig HD and have a extra 486 computer I was/am
using to setup a server.

But a friend gave me a 486 EISA machine, with bunch of 1-2gig SCSI
drives, 1 internal scsi CDROM and I got an external 6 unit CDROM
system.

Any suggestion on which one I should use?

this is for a HOME system.

I think it's heavily dependent on who the local @Home franchise is run by.
I use Cox@Home in San Diego, and it's given me no problems with Linux.
You can use DHCP with them but they recommend against it, and for non-Windows
OSes everything you need is on a printed sheet they give you when they
install and sync up the cable modem ( external, Ethernet, includes a
crossover cable ) ( Windows users get it as well, but most of them use
the software on the CD and so don't care about it ). Speed's good, usually
around 2.5-3 megabits down and anywhere from 20-200 K/sec up depending
on time of day.

Visor should work, the problem should be with the usb cradle. Can you access

(Just kidding, though some in the newsgroups do not appreciate cross
posting or posting in html format.)

There's a program for linux called Partimage, it's similar to Ghost in
that it creates an image of the partition that you want to backup and
then allows you to save it in compressed .tgz or .bz2 format. You can
create 2 partimage floppy disks, the first is a generic boot disk and
the other contains the partimage program, this allows you to run
partimage on any machine running linux.

Subject: Hardware Blues Too noisy and hot..Need a new setup
Date: 25 May 2001 16:19:53 -0700

I have been running linux for several years so not completely green
but really have no idea what kind of new hardware is out there that
may solve my problem.

My machines are too noisy and produce too much heat (Mine are pentium
200s circa 1997 tall towers). My wifes machine has a different look
size and shape (shorter and fatter) and is very quiet and seems cooler
too. Its only a couple mnths old and is a 633 MHz celeron.

Its not an off the shelf unit. I had it built up at a computer shop,
not really familiar with the name brands of hardware especially any
thing newer than about 1998

I can't just steal my wifes computer, nor convince her that win2k
really sucks, because she has a black belt in k-razor. So,.. I'd like
to rebuild my stuff by building a box up from parts with no OS. A new
style case, motherboard 1g+ Mhz, new video and sound cards. I have
enough ethernet cards and hard disks scattered around to start a small
war so no problems there unless compatibility problems.

I want a powerfull quiet machine with the new 1g+ mhz ratings. Can
someone coach me a bit on what case, mother board, video, and sound
card to get. My sound requirements are nearly non-existent since I
rarely run with sound. Video needs are fairly basic too, just enough
to power the newer desktops (gnome/sawfish for me) Browser and several
instances of emacs. I do want enough video power to run a huge
virtual desktop 1600x1278 (17 inch monitor)

I plan on having 128MB Memory

Or maybe direct me to a web site were you build your unit up and they
give you a price.

Especially of interest would be some commentary on the
benefits/drawbacks of the different style cases.

I don't really like these monster towers, and wondered if one can
still get those flat boxes you can set the monitor on and still be
able to install the newer motherboards and other guts, and not have
cooling troubles.

I've never had a unit like that but they look more space saving and
utilitarian.

Maybe even completely different architecture than intel is worth
looking at.

Trident 4DWave chipset-based card with ALSA drivers. You may not have
heard much about the chipset, it is old and Trident doesn't have the
greatest reputation for their graphics chipsets, but this card, with the
latest ALSA drivers, offers one thing that, at the moment, no other
reasonably-priced card offers in Linux: hardware mixing. So you can play
multiple PCM streams simeltaneously without needing to resort to a
software kludge like ESD. The wavetable synth is already partially
supported, and at some point in the future it will have full hardware MIDI
playback support (the only modern PCI card with a supported hardware MIDI
synth right now is the SB live).

The 3d positional support in windows may not be quite up to that of the SB
Live, CS4630, or your old Aureal card, but it does work. These features
aren't supported on any card in Linux, though, so if you are using this
card primarily on Linux you shouldn't pay extra for it.

4DWave based cards range from VERY cheap OEM cards (I got a 2-channel
Shark Predator 4D for under $10 on ebay, it sounds extremely good) to a
pretty swank-looking 4-channel card from Hoontech with digital I/O. The
rear channels on these are supported by linux, AFAIK. There are 2
versions of this chipset, the 4DWave-DX and 4DWave-NX. The NX has more
features and is used by most of the cards with 4-speaker support, the
cheaper cards are based on the DX. But...according to linux, the DX-based
el cheapo card I got is actually an NX (hey, I'm not complaining).

I've seen Linuxconf screw up a few things in the past. The version I

It's similar but not the same. Mine is large because of all the
network playing my friends and I do. I have about 12 different
networks (many host of 12 different networks). I have a rather large
lab at home (large for the average user).

This will be the minority opinion, but unless you really have some special
requirements, you might want to look at off the shelf boxes. I just bought a
Compaq 5004, 1 ghz Athlon, 30 gig HD, CD,
CD/RW, NIC, 128 meg ram, expandable to 3 256 meg cards if you want, for
US$800. I haven't put Linux on it yet, as I run another machine for Linux,
but other than the modem, I wouldn't anticipate a problem.

Both Dell and Compaq are having firesales; I don't think you'll be able to
beat the price with components, plus when you drag the Compaq home from
CostCo or wherever, it generally runs, and keeps on running. Perhaps I've
just been lucky with my Compaqs, but they have never given me anywheres near
the grief of a box full of pieces.

Subject: Can't even recognize Promise Ultra100TX2 without kernel params, and can't
enable dma... HELP!
Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 05:25:10 GMT

It's been a long week! I tried putting my 60 gig drive in my 300 mhz
box. It didn't like the drive, because its bios (even updated) couldn't
handle a drive that big. So I tried buying a separate controller card.
By looking in the Ultra DMA mini-howto, I found out how to get it at
least recognized by adding kernel parameters, but then I couldn't enable
DMA.

Here is a re-cap of what I have done. If anybody knows what I am doing
wrong, please share!

1. Installed the card
2. Put one drive, to be the root drive, as master/single on IDE0
3. Put CD-ROM as master/single on IDE1
4. Put another drive on the Promise controller (IDE2)
5. Put the last one on the Promise controller (IDE3)
6. Installed Red Hat 7.1. Neither setup nor post-install could see the
promise controller or connected drives
7. Added kernel parameters based on Ultra-DMA mini-howto. Now drives
are visible
8. Created partitions and filesystems, then mounted them. So far, so
good...
9. Tried enabling DMA via hdparm. Failed with error message
"HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted" huh?
10. Tried different IO addresses as kernel parameters. Only ones from
Howto could boot, so that wasn't the problem...
11. Tried compiling my own kernel, in case the stock kernel left out
support for the Promise card. Same behavior in all aspects.
12. Tried adding "hdg=pdc202xx" to kernel parameters to force it to use
the Promise driver. No change. Course, don't know if that's the right
way to do it, either... :)
13. Poked around in /proc/ide/hdg. contents of "settings" file said
that using_dma was 0, min 0, max 1, rw. Yet for some reason, hdparm
can't set it.

I'm pretty much out of ideas and my frustration level is getting quite
high. If anybody has any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or has ideas where
to look (or who to ask) for answers, or ANYTHING, please let me know.

Thanks!

The current version of the Linksys LNE100TX does not use a real Tulip
chip, but instead is built around a clone/copy of the Tulip. It appears
to be a good, reasonably priced card.

NDC (Sohoware) is another company that manufactures cards based upon
Tulip-chipset clones...
