Oh boy, you forgot to CC alt.kitchen.sink...

Back to your point.

Yes. I have done it often and never had any problems. You need to
understand what you back up though, for example you may want to
back up each fs separately (in case that you have multiple partitions).
'tar -l' will take care of that.

Naturally, you want the system to be at rest at the time (as I said
this is not mandatory). The best archive you get if you got into single
user mode.

If you find the archive too large then you may want to exclude some
unneeded directories.

I got exactly the same behavior with redhat 7.0 and the
2.2.16-22 kernel from redhat.

After some work with lilo, the hard disks are working, but
there is no way to enable DMA for the drives.
The drives on the onboard IDE cannels are using dma without trouble.
So I'm really nosy what you will find out from the promise guys.

Depends on the cards themselves. If they're PCI cards they
should be able to share the IRQ without problems. If they're ISA
cards you may need to jumper them to separate IRQ's or run the
manufacturer's utility program to make the changes. These are
usually DOS/Windows programs, so you may need to be able to boot
DOS or Windows to effect the change. Record the new settings and
configure linux to use them.

Thanks for the tips... I wasn't able to track down Antech. There are
dozens of companies with that name, a few are computer related but I
didn't find one that had a product line including cases.

RedHat 7.1 comes with 2.4.2. When that didn't work, I downloaded 2.4.5.
And of course I made sure to include support for Promise cards. If
what you say is true, that the kernel should just recognize it, then my
guess is that the TX2 comes with a brand-new chipset that isn't
recognized by the kernel. ARGH!

Any ideas how to know for sure?

I ran into a similar problem with RH7.1. I was changing the XF86Config
file, but RH7.1 uses XFreee86 4.0.3 so I should have been modifying the
XF86Config-4 config file. Once I started modifying the correct config file,
all went fine.

Subject: Re: Webcam hardware

Hi Pete,

You can actually implement a good solution for about $50.

The hardware you can use with Linux is dependent on the drivers available,
which is dependent on the chipsets in the cameras. The two most common
chipsets seem to be the OV511 and the CPiA. If you search the web, you can
find the drivers.

I purchased a Creative Labs Webcam Plus (which is really a webcam III I
think) and used the OV511 driver from the Internet to achieve a solution for
$50 (the cost of the Webcam). I used version 1.39 of the OV511 driver (1.40
doesn't work for me). I also found the application "videodog" on the web,
which works well for me.

I have a script running constantly that looks something like this (I can't
remember the details):
   sleep 60 #machine startup delay
   x = 10
   while [x < 10] #loop forever
      videodog ... >tempfile.bin
      sleep 2
      cjpeg ... <tempfile.bin >camera_image.jpg
cp camera_image.jpg ... (to the web path)
      sleep 2
   endwhile

So, my image is updated about every 5 seconds. Surprisingly, collisions
with the Apache server are very rare. I think the "cp" above dumps it to a
disk buffer so it is virtually instant and the probability of the file being
changed while the server is serving it is low.

I have a javascript on the web page that reloads the image every 5 seconds.
So, the viewer's browser does this.

The OV511 driver is not perfect. The color goes in and out a bit in some
kinds of light, and there was one kernel panic (but only one). Since I just
got the webcam set up last week, I haven't had the chance to see if it has
any effect on long-term stability. However, the driver is open-source, so
if there is something wrong and you have the technical skill to correct.

Please write if I can be of assistance in any way.

Here is my e-mail:

Subject: HELP: copy floppy with 8k-sector using fdrawcmd
Date: 26 May 2001 12:49:14 -0700

Hi,

Now I've reached a point, where I need help... :-(

I'm trying to copy a floppy-disk, with a standard DOS-format
(80 cyls, 18 sectors/cyl.) and one "non-standard"-track:
head 0, cyl.22 contains sectors 1 to 12 and 18. Moreover,
sector 18 seems to have 8k.

First, I duplicated the floppy using a MS***-tool ignoring the
error-message concerning cylinder 22.
I switched to linux and formatted track 22 using

$ fdrawcmd format 0 2 18 0x1b 0xf6 track=22 < input1
# "input1" is a binary file containing:
===========
16 00 01 02
16 00 02 02
16 00 03 02
...
16 00 0C 02
16 00 12 06 <-- the modification
16 00 10 02
16 00 11 02
16 00 0D 02
16 00 0E 02
16 00 0F 02
===========
and fdutils is version 5.3

and wrote the first sectors using

$ fdrawcmd write 0 22 0 1 2 0 0x1b 0xff length=6144 need_seek track=22 <  input2
# "input2" was just of dump from the original disk.

At this point I check the copied disk with

$fdrawcmd readid 0 track=22 need_seek repeat=20

and got sectors 1 to 12 followed by 18,13,14,15,16,17 -- fine!

Now the trouble starts: after writing the remaining sector with

$ fdrawcmd write 0  22 0 18 6 0 0x1b 0xff length=512 track=22 no-mt < input3
# you guess: "input3" is the corresponding dump....

and checking the available sectors again, I found only
sectors 6,7,8,9,10,11,12 and 18 --- what happened to #1 to 5??????
And how can I prevent this effect????

Any hint, either to this board or via mail appreciated.
Thanx

Markus

Personally I like the Yamaha 2100 16x burner. but most anything should work.

I got mine as a refurb for $130.

If you use an IDE CD-RW there are some parameters you have to set in
your modules.conf and lilo.conf files.

The process is described quite well in the xcdroast README.atapi file.

Subject: Re: hard disk headache

Paul wrote:

> So, can my hard disk be saved? How long will it continue to work?

Well, the question is this: Did you make any hardware modifications to your
system after which the problems started? Yes, I have seen numerous cases
when hard disk showed some signs of failling soon (like strange sounds
coming from the HD) that were caused by a system misconfiguration and could
be fixed by setting the system up correctly.

However, if you didn't change anything which could have triggered the
problem, then your hard disk is in fact about to die. I cannot tell you how
long it will continue to work (I think nobody can tell you that), but you
should probably back up your important data as soon as possible, if you
have not already done so. Then you should probably get a new HD as soon as
possible. If you are curious how long your current disk will continue to
make it, you can of course continue to use it until it does no longer work
at all, but make sure you always have the latest version of your important
data backed up somewhere.

Also, you may want to check out if your failing HD is still under warranty.
Western Digital always gives you a five year warranty, I don't know what
Quantum does, though.

By the way: Did you notice the strangeness in your HD's identification
string? You said that it says "UQNAUT MIFERABLLS". If you always replace
two following characters with each other (U with Q, N with A...), then you
get the correct one: "Quantum Fireball" (the S after the L seems to belong
to the model number that follows). I find this somewhat strange - does your
computer show the same strange ID string during POST, or does it really say
"Quantum Fireball" there? Since you said your drive worked correctly
before, I don't think that this is related to your problem. I still find it
a little strange, though.

Greetings
Nils
