Stated several times in this group: The 2.2.xx kernels do not natively
see the off board controllers. They must be patched. The 2.4.4 kernel
sees all.

hmm, maybe an upgrade to xfree86 v4.0.3 would be helpful... i don't know.
i once had the nvidia driers working with x version 4.0.2.. never tried

Take a look at ide.txt in your kernel source tree. Probably in

Dear Mr. Montgomery:

While the Linux kernel itself (at least on an intel platform) will only boot
on a 386, you could of course try loading Minix or ELKS onto the machine. I
don't know how useful it would be, but it would definately be interesting!

I've been monitoring my swap file, and it almost never gets over 5%
used.
I have 128 MB RAM and 250 MB swap file. That's a lot of unused HD space
I'd like to get back.

Is there a way to resize that partition and reapply the space to the
root partition? Or at least take a chunk of it as another partition?

Thanks for any assistance!!

Drivers can be downloaded from Intel's web site:

Try this URL: http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/support_intel.asp

Then networking / Adapters for Servers / Intel PRO/1000 Family

Try the other suggestions, but if either is a PNP card, try
man isapnp. Also look in conf.modules (or modules.conf for
RH 7.X).

have you since re-booted again? do you get the same symptoms again? the only
thing that comes to mind off the top of my head (if that isn't mixing
metaphors ;) is that your keyboard socket or some related part of the mobo
suffered some mysterious hardware failure between BIOS time and using it at
the console...

when you say it "doesn't work" I assume you mean there's no response to the
keyboard at all, right?

Have a look at the Compaq Armada M300, very small and lightweight. The HW (XGA,
sound, ethernet) is very easy to setup, no special stuff (even the Winmodem
works :-O).

David Plaut made a good summary of the M300 and Linux:

Subject: Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI ES4815 (es1371) problem
Date: 26 May 2001 18:42:27 -0700

Hi, I'm running Debian 2.2r3 with kernel 2.2.19 on an Asus A7v w/Duron
650. I've got a Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card, on the top of
the box it claims "model ES4815". After a bit of trial and error
getting it to work a couple months ago, I found that the es1371 driver
works with it, so I have it compiled statically into the kernel, not
as a module.

My problem is that the driver seems to have weird issues with queueing
sounds when other sounds are playing, and with freezing for a
noticeable period of time after certain sounds are played, when trying
to play sounds from other programs.

First, the freezing problem. This primarly happens with the console
beep in KDE2's 'konsole' program. I can make the beep in konsole as
many times as I like with no problems, but after a beep has been
played in konsole, the sound driver goes into a weird state for around
30 seconds or more, where if any other program is loaded that tries to
play sounds (xmms, snes9x, rocknes, and so forth) there will either be
an error (rocknes says "Cannot find sound card"), or more commonly,
the program will simply freeze hard for 30 seconds or so, and then
start executing normally as soon as the driver decides it wants to
work again.

Secondly, the queueing problem. A good example of this is xmms +
gaim. When I'm playing mp3s in xmms, if events happen in gaim that
would normally cause a sound effect, I hear nothing... until the
current mp3 is done playing. Then, all the sound effects seem to be
played at once, that were made by gaim during the time the mp3 was
playing! This is, obviously, sub-optimal behavior. Interestingly, if
a console beep was made during mp3 play, it will often be played and
then the driver will freeze just like it does in the above
description, for some period of time, before it 'unfreezes' and xmms
goes to the next file in the playlist.

Any ideas if this is a fixable problem? It was present in 2.2.18 as
well as 2.2.19.

I am runing Red Hat 7 on one with no problems. The Pentium III works,
but I don't know if you can change its speed mode with out resetting the
computer. Windows does not give me the option of changing the speed. To
use the X windows you will need to download the XF86Config file from
dell support site(support.dell.com).

RedHat 7 uses kernal 2.2.16 and the update shows a download for
2.2.18. I updated everything but the kernal(too big) on my desktop but
not my laptop yet. you will want to do the same.

Can't help with xmms, but the problem does not lie with the es1371 driver
in the kernel, whether compiled in or loaded as a module. I had the same
problem when I was using the on-board via686a sound chip WRT KDE. Just
wait a few seconds and KDE releases the audio device. BTW, I use a 2.4.4
kernel on one machine and a 2.2.19 on another. Problem exists on both.
Perhaps if you try using Gnome??? Not me, I detest Gnome.

If you question what kind of sound card you have, the best place to
determine that is the big chip on the card. It will be marked with
something like ES1373 as on my card.

With 1 meg or video ram and a 133 chip, I don't need any sort of "special"

Did you try "xconfigurator" from a terminal? That should be a text based
setup utility close to the one you used when doing the install. I did
something like that on a laptop and using it fixed it.

Subject: TDK 12/10/32 CD-Rewriter and Mandrake Linux 8.0
Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 02:28:50 GMT

I have a TDK 12/10/32 CD-Rewriter in an otherwise standard system: Asus
P2B-S, Seagate Cheetah SCSI HD, ATI Rage Fury Video card -- a system that
ran Mandrake Linux 7.2 earlier but with a different (and now dead) CD-ROM
drive.

This TDK CD-ROM is installed as an IDE device, not SCSI as is the HD. The
CD-R faq at

from http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq05.html#S5-1-42

tells me that this TDK CD-R is based on the Plextor PX-W1210A, one of the
devices suppported by cdrecord.

My problem is that when I install Mandrake Linux 8.0 it can't use this
CD-ROM, even to just read CDs. It lists the TDK CD-ROM drive as a SCSI drive
on chain 1 (the HD is on chain 0), even though the TDK CD-ROM is an IDE
device.

The cdrecord web site

http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/
problems.html#english

suggests this is to be expected and can be solved if one reconfigures the
linux kernel. Can someone point me to info that tells me how to reconfigure
the kernel, or how to get linux to at least let me read cd-roms (if not
record them)?

The interesting thing is that the Asus MB let's me boot from this TDK CD-ROM
drive and get Mandrake Linux 8.0 installed from the installation CD-ROMS,
but once I boot the installed Mandrake Linux from HD I can no longer access
the CD-ROM drive. Also, if I try to do the install by booting from Mandrake
Linux floppy installation disk, then I can't do the install because the
installation program (DrakeX?) can find but not operate the TDK CD-ROM.
Again, it looks like it thinks the TDK CD-ROM is a SCSI device.

Thanks in adance, Warren Ferguson
