Greetings All:
Has anyone tried the ATI Expert 98 AGP video card with RedHat 7.0 ?
This particular model is under consideration as an upgrade since
its technical specs. imply very good performance relative to my needs and
the PRICE is right.
Anyone have any thoughts/opinions regard this video card?
FWIW: RedHat 7.0 installation went very smoothly.

Hi,
does anybody have a valid XF86Config file for my elsa x2 gforce with
tvout. I want to start the tvout when I start the Xserver (4.0.3) out of
the console. tvout and X works fine when I boot with no monitor connected
(only Tv is connected).

Sometimes its actually the BIOS. Sometime back I had to live with 64MB of ram
on an Abit BE6. Never did use the meme switch, or was it by using mem the system
crashed? I really can't remember. But anyway, had to flash the bios to fix the
problem.
( Abit started making linux friendly system sometime back, and posted a beta on
the BIOS flash (RISKY!!!), especially with their Gentus distribution,. I've
never used Gentus myself, though.)

Which one is it?
IF it is a real hardware modem, you'll probably have to
set it up correctly first, prior to calling setserial.
If it is a PNP-card, use
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
and then edit the resulting file to your likings.
If it is a card with jumpres, set it to some unused
I/O and IRQ values, _then_ call setserial and tell the kernel
about the new port you just added.
Note: If it's a winmodem, you're probably out of luck.

Hello,
I'm currently running redhat 6.2 / linux 2.4.5 on my Compaq Prolinea 575.
You can get F10 Setup and Personal Computer Diagnostics
from compaq web site
http://www.compaq.com/support/files/desktops/us/locate/24_17.html
Download "F10 Setup and Personal Computer Diagnostics" SP4711.exe
and run SP4711.exe on your MS-DOS prompt.
(You need windows box to do this.)
It create "Computer Setup/V" and
"Personal Computer diagnostics TEST and INSPECT"
Both are self-bootable diskette.
No need to press F10 during boot with these disks.
You cannot boot from ATAPI CD-ROM drive,
wo'nt boot with IDE HDD over 8GB,
and may need to do BIOS reconfigure manually
every time after changing hardware configuration.
Prolinea 575 is very old product.
But can boot from SCSI CD-ROM drive with bootable SCSI adapter.
I'm using Tekram DC-390F SCSI adapter,
3com 3c905B-TX NIC,
TEAC CD-532S CD-ROM drive and
30GB QUANTUM FBLC30.0AT IDE HDD with IDE-SCSI converter AEC-7720UW.
My old compaq can boot from CD-ROM.

Hi,
My on-board sound chip VIA AC97 audio controller (WDM) works fine with
WinME. I tried to run sndconfig to enable the sound in my Linux
installation in RedHat 7.0. The program detected that the sound device is
VIA82cxxx. After I confirm the autoprobe was done and my system hangs. I
rebooted Linux and the startup freeze when starting the sound module.
Any body can help?

Since you say "ISA", I presume an _internal_ modem.
An internal ISA modem has it's own serial port on
the card; if you have two already, it will be the third.
Check your dmesg file for ttySx lines.
It _must_ be set to its own IRQ and "COM" locations
before use.

OK, Guys, I finally got it fixed last night and am able to dual-boot
Win98/Linux RH7.1 now.
Thank vvm to all helpful advice. My salute to you all :-)
Herebelow are steps carried out last night :
1) hdb's 2nd partition: Changed partition type from 05 (extended) to
85x (linux extension)
2) hda's 1st partition: Changed partition type from 0bx (Win95 FAT32)
to 0cx (Win 95 FAT32 LBA)
3) Zeroed the first 512 bytes of hda1 partition with dd command as
follows:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 bs=512 count=1
4) Booted the PC with Win98 StartUp diskette and execute "sys c:"
Thanks again for making me look like a BIG hero at home :-)

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Although I've been a unix user for 16 years (sysV,SunOS,Solaris), I
just got up enough nerve to install linux on my machine at home.
(In other words, I'm an experienced unix *user*, but a linux and
admin newbie.)
I successfully installed RH7.1 (dual boot with WinME) and am gradually
getting all the pieces working.
Time for my first venture in seeking help from the usenet community!
Problem:
I have been unable to get sound out of the SoundBlaster Live! card.
Specifics:
(The card works just fine with the WinME boot, so it's not a hardware
failure...)
I ran sndconfig -- it detected the card just fine. But when it
plays a sample, no sound comes out.
I ran two different mixer programs (under Gnome), and made sure that
nothing was muted and volumes were turned up. Still no sound.
(I have also rebooted to no avail :0<)
Based on advice from searches in newsgroups and linux sites, I
checked /proc/pci, /proc/interrupts, /proc/iports, /proc/dma.
The IRQ and I/O Range settings are the same as those that show
up when I check the device drivers in windows. (IRQ=9, I/O Range EFAO-EFAF).
Still, I cannot get any sound with linux :o<
Here are a some particulars that may or may not be of help:
1) Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! (series WDM)
(hardware version 007)
2) AMD Athlon 1GHz processor (Gateway machine) with 256MB RAM
3) the winmodem (some sort of home networking/modem combo card) also
uses IRQ=9 -- I don't use the home networking features, since I
also have an ethernet card installed. Of course, the winmodem
doesn't work with linux and I have little hope for ever getting
it to work. Even though the same IRQ is used, both the modem
and the sound card work just fine with WinME.
4) Nvdia GeForce2 video card (the Soundblaster card sits next to the
video card, the modem is a few slots over)
5) anything else I haven't mentioned here that is important?
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Some "very old" pentiums using simms need RAM modules inserted in matching
pairs,
eg 2 x 32MB or 2 x 64 MB
could this be your problem?

I have the same sound chip on my extra athlon board running mandrake
8 and it installs the sound drivers w/out errors even the sound mixer
works properly. When I get home from work I will look and see what
modules are being loaded for this device, although I do now that the
newest kernel (2.4.5) has support for it. You might want to look at
recompiling the kernel and have the device compiled in and not a
module. Also look at the file /var/log/messages for a more accurate
error of whats going on, post the portion of the file to this thread
as it will help trouble shoot your problem.

Have you tryed running, v4l-conf, after changeing video modes? If not
that could be your problem. Try it and see, if thats not it, v4l-conf
will not mess anything up.

Subject: Dual AMD AthlonMP and Linux. Does it work?

Does the new Dual Athlon MP's work with Linux (particularly Redhat 7.1).
Do you need special drivers or any moderations to the kernel?
I'm looking to replace our current server with a dual CPU system running
Linux and like the initial look of the performance from the 760MP chipset
and Athlon's compared with P3/Xeon.
Is anyone currently using Linux with this configuration e.g on the Tyan
Thunder board?

Hello,
Supposed to work, don't know anyone who has one yet. If you look the config
directory of the RedHat kernel source, /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs, there is
even a config in there for althon-smp. :-).

In your BIOS setup, there is usually a setting like
PnP OS Installed = Yes
Change that to 'No' and see if it fixes the problem.

It won't be long before the CPU is a card in a slot on your ATX videoboard
