If I select this kind of procesor then there is no way (on my computer
Duron 750 + RH7.1) to run system correctly. But if I choose i586/685
everything works fine. What is wrong with it?? Should I choose something
more to run a new kernel on Duron??

I am using a Tosiba XM-5201B drive on a NCR53C860 SCSI
controller.

I can read directory's of CD-Roms and small tekst files
without problems.

I am trying to rip audio from CD's using Grip. I can see the
number of songs that are on the disk. But when I try to rip
the file I get the message 'Unable to open drive' (using the
-v option).

When using paranioa I apparently rips the CD's at 10000x
speed. At the end it has actually done nothing. When using
CDDA2WAV I apparently rips at slower speed. When I inspect
the generated MP3 files they are of the right length (time)
but there is no noise recorded.

The command I give is grip -d /dev/scd0 -v

I mean IDE controller support for U100 and 815's bridges support in the
kernel so that everything works OK on the kernel level.

I'm looking at a cow-orker's copy of "Linux - The Complete Reference," 4th
edition (2001), by Richard Peterson, which includes info on 2.4 kernel.
It's from Osborne, ISBN #0-07-212940-9 and weighs in at a hefty 1200+
pages.

AFAIK Xeons are just Pentiums on steroids ;) Meaning larger cache.

Now, as you stated "x86_serial_nr=1" is _only_ for Athlons. If you'd
know why you need that, then you'd see you don't need it for the Xeons.

There a few things my 2 cents don't understand:

- You're making a server on a A7V?
- Being a server you care more about the Gforce being supported, rather
than performance issues?
- Being your "First attempt at Linux" you are aiming at building a
server?

Sorry, but it looks like you don't know what a server is...
Then again you don't seem interested in knowing what hw is best at
serving what.

Hi

By now I have a cheap graphics adapter with the i740 chip, and a cheap Voodoo2
card. For some reason I can't get the drivers for the Voodoo2 card to work
properly. I've tried almost anything, compiling from source, 20 different
RPM's, using Slackwares packages and so on, but nothing has been working. So,
now I'm considering giving up, and trading my two graphic cards for a Voodoo3
with a friend and then using DRI. So I wanted to know if anyone has any good or
bad experiences with the Voodoo3 (AGP) card and the drivers for it?

Regards Jonas

By the way, I'm using a prerelease of Slackware 7.2 (slackware-current), with
glibc 2.2.2, gcc 2.92., kernel 2.4.3, and every thing except the Voodoo2 driver
works perfectly...

I had the problem with a RH upgrade, The new XF86 supports
Geforce and conflicts with an already installed driver.

I had to return the entry in XF98Config-4 sub section "Device"
"Driver nvidia" back to the original entry "nv".

You need theses drivers compiled :

usbcore
usb-uhci (common MB ; or usb-???? for Ali ; see kernel doc)
scanner

Usualy usbmgr could load your driver at demand.
But, once you have tested your configuration, I suggest you put the modules
in the kernel ;
thus avoiding most configuration.

You need /etc/sane.d/epson.conf with

USB /dev/usb/scanner0

or

USB /dev/usbscanner0

I think the scanner driver need a patch that you'll find at :

To me, every UNIX administrator and every UNIX power user should have
the following book:

* "UNIX in a Nutshell", by Daniel Gilley and the staff of O'Reilly &
Assoc.

You didn't say what sort of books you wanted:

* Technical?
* Programming?
* Administration?
* Introductory?

However, I would recommend the "....Unleashed" series - like "Linux
Unleashed" and "Red Hat Linux Unleashed." Also likely a good source
is "Running Linux" published by O'Reilly.

Also, when you go looking at books, don't just look at Linux books,
but also at generic UNIX books - stay away from version specific books
(like Unixware or Solaris or HP-UX) - they all have their differences.

Does that mean that drivers compiled based on a specific kernel version are
not backwards-compatible with newer kernels? with linux, there's more than
one way to do stuff, right?

Hi everybody!

I bought a DVD-rom as a toy for me. Now it plays with me and noch not the
other way around.. ;)
First I installed it using m-windows98 - no probs. Can watch movies as I
would ahve a normal dvd-player..
But due to the fact that windows sucks, I NEED to get it installed for linux.
Finaly, I gou gop got it, but the maximum output is 8fps (8 of 25! (PAL)).
I think, I read really EVERYTHING bundled to my (shut shitty) suse 7.0 dist.
Due to the fact, that I don't have internet, my web-resaches web-researches
did'nt bring anything (only have 5 minutes in a row at work. So I wasn't even
able to find an interesting page.. ;).
Now I ask you. WHY ?!?!?!?
My config is:

DVD - 12x atapi
GFX: 3dfx voodoo banshee
DIST: Suse Linux v7.0 (updated to kernel 2.4.3)

For my banshee, I use the framebuffer-drivers (tdfxfb) -. loaded at boottime.
Okay.. Hopefully that's all the information, you need for helping me...
Please give me answers via email ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
thanx in advance,
   stimpy

PS: I wrote this mail using telnet-connection to out our news-server so I had d
no backspace or anything - thats the reason, why I did'nt delete misspelled
words..... Sorry... I'm a news-addict, I know.. ;)
