LIke I said Jim I am new at this and was in need of some advice on
where to look for help. How you got I am only interested in my video
card from my message is beyond me. As far as your post it gave nothing
to me on anykind of help. All that you gave was criticism on my lack
of knowledge of a server.
I hope all your post are not like this to new people trying to get
help on Linux
What I am trying to make is a simple web server for a simple web page.
Perhaps you should take note to the post that John gave as his had
help and 2 links for additional help.
Thanks John for the post and Jim take some lessons at being

Do you mean "forwards compatible"? All I know is that I had the driver
for 2.2.17 working in mandrake 7.2 and it would not work (as they
insist) in Mandrake 8.0 and the 2.4 kernel. If you really know what you
are doing perhaps you COULD make it work, I don't know. Perhaps a
someone will come up with a patch. For myself, I went out and bought a
hardware modem.
Best of luck in any case,

Hi!

Server is something which sits in a preferably locked and air-conditioned
room, connected to network and performing some predetermined task. It
definitely does not need a sound card or a fancy graphics card, not to
mention monitor and keyboard. If You need a machine that will only act
a web server and not planning to use it as a desktop, why not to go with a
100 MHz 486, 32 MB of RAM, 1 GB disk and some cheap network card? Usually
You can get something like this for free (maybe people will pay YOU to get
this stuff off their hands ;-), but nevertheless it will give you enough
experience in Linux installation and setup.

Hope that helped,

Jurij.

They can't be the same. You have made a mistake.

Tell me .. did you do as required and link

    /usr/include/linux -> /usr/src/linux/include/linux
    /usr/include/asm   -> /usr/src/linux/include/asm

    /usr/src/linux    -> /usr/src/linux-2.4.2

???

> pctel.o: unresolved symbol bh_mask
> pctel.o: unresolved symbol request_region

These are common symbols, grep in /proc/ksyms for them and you should
see them. They're part of the base kernel.

Show the output of

  grep bh_mask /proc/ksyms

please.

It is probable that you have forgotten to match eithe the SMP or the
MODVERSIONS setting fo your kernel sources against that of your running
kernel. I.e. you are not using the config file that belongs to your
running kernel. Please use it.

OK .. I was wrong. The problem is what you have done, not what you have
not done. The pctel code you have appears to be for kernel 2.2, not
kernel 2.4. The bh_mask symbol is not exported in 2.4 kernels.

Either use a 2.2. kernel, or get pctel code for a 2.4 kernel.

Yes, that code is for an older kernel, but I was hoping that it would also
work with 2.4. Luckily perhaps<g>, I just found and downloaded a tar for
someone else's pctel code that is supposedly a 2.4 version. We'll see how
that goes now.

Thanks again for all your help!

The field of Linux books is pretty broad. There are tutorial books,
reference books, etc.; and these cover Linux generally, Linux
networking, Linux programming, etc., as well as sub-sets of these (like
books on specific servers). I've got a Web page with suggestions in
several categories at http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/. (That page
features my own books, so I can't claim to be an unbiased source of
information. ;-) Sub-pages include some suggestions on books by others,
though.)

This is a FAQ. Look back through dejanews or google groups. Basically,
all you need to do in install the ALSA sound drivers from

Unless you are running a proxy, you probably should install your new drive
under windows, where you can run games on it - that's what windos is for,
playing games. Linux is great for serious stuff, but as I said, unless you
need it for server space, Linux isn't memory hungry...

  $150-$300 for a used card is well worth all of the fiddling that you'll
save, and will have added benefits as well. After using hardware RAID on
my servers, I'm even considering a small array on my home workstation....

I am using an Ultra100 TX2 add-on PCI card which uses the Promise
20268 chipset. I downloaded 2.4.5, enabled the chipset support during
compile-time, compiled, and installed the shiny new kernel. So I
rebooted and it didn't recognize it, right? Same thing you're seeing.
 So I put two and two together... (you were close when you said you
read the UDMA HOWTO) I think that's where I saw that you have to pass
bootup options to the kernel.

What options? Well a quick "cat /proc/pci" shows the card in the list
as well as the i/o ports it is using. There are 5 i/o ports shown
which go something like this:
a: 0x9c00
b: 0xa000
c: 0xa400
d: 0xa800
e: 0xac00

The options you pass to the kernel are:
ide2=a,b+2 ide3=c,d+2

So in my case:
ide2=0x9c00,0xa002 ide3=0xa400,0xa802

I put the line in my lilo.conf (under the correct image section) with
an append:
...
...
label=linux
append="ide2=0x9c00,0xa000 ide3=0xa400,0xa802"

Saved it, ran lilo, rebooted, and *poof*, the hard drive was
recognized.

I am using 2 hard drives, one on the motherboard's port and one on the
Promise controller. I dunno what you should do to get it to boot off
of it, though, but I suspect it would be a similar fix, except you
would specify ide0 and 1 (assuming the chipset was built-into the
motherboard).

I also should mention that this fix should work for any of the Promise
UDMA 202XX cards such as the FastTrack66 or 100 or the Ultra66 or
others... look at the largest black chip on the controller to see
what chipset you are using.

Good luck,
CD

Subject: arkeia command line version...
Date: 8 Jun 2001 11:00:40 -0700

I'm trying to find a step by step way of backing up to a tape library
(spectralogic treefrog) with arkeia command line version. If anyone
has done this (even w/out a library) please post your steps from
setting up the drives and savepacks (etc...) to an interactive backup.
 Here is what I posted on the Arkeia newsgroup w/no responce. This is
an attempt at a NULL backup (just a test run) so if you see any flaws
(which is very possible ;) ) please correct me:

====================
ok, I'll post my trials and results...I'm sure I'm missing something
here,
but I'm still a little unclear on the exact flow of information from
clients->server->backup medium.

here is my bootup scsi info:

  Type: Medium Changer ANSI SCSI revision: 02

here are the commands I am running to attempt a test:
# arkc -drive -create -D name=TEST type=NULL rewind_dev=/dev/st0
# arkc -drivepack -create -D name=TESTPACK type=NULL
# arkc -pool -create -D name=TESTPOOL type=NULL
# arkc -tape -create -D name=TESTTAPE type=NULL
(my first question is how do I know /dev/st0 is correct?)
# arkc -library -create -D name=TESTLIB type=SL2000-15 libdev=/dev/sga
(again, how can I see if /dev/sga is correct?)
# arkc -savepack -create -D name=TESTSAVE tree_name=ghengis:/home
(ghengis is the localhost)
# arkc -backup -start -D skname=TESTSAVE plname=TESTPOOL
