Hello,
Anyone know if the Digital-XG Hoontech soundcard is supported under Linux.
It is based on the Yamaha YMF-744 chip. Great sounding card especially
under BeOS, pity BeOS ain't going anywhere.

I have Linux!!! Linux RULEZ!!!
Linux Redhat 6.1 to be exact.
I have the Diamond Viper II AGP Video Card. Savage 2000 Chipset.
I can not find any drivers for X-Windows for my Diamond Viper II.
This has forced me to do EVERYTHING from the command prompt.
Now I have already figured out that doing EVERYTHING from the command
prompt is the way to go and that the X-Windows interface is really
just for newbies who don't know how to do anything in Linux. You don't
transfer from Windows to Linux to have a GUI interface. If you did,
you've missed the point.
Yes I know all that and totally agree with it. But it still would be
nice to have an X-Windows interface that does more then 640x480 cause
that's all I can do. For one thing, 640x480 make it hard to view all
my online html documentaion for Linux. That not I haven't discover VI
and LESS. And I like VI better then EMACS. And LESS RULEZ!!! MORE
SUCKS!!!
So if anyone knows how to get a Diamond Viper II Savage 2000 Chipset
to work with X-Windows, I would really like to know.

Have a look at www.nvidia.com (Linux drivers section)
Download the new drivers... When you install these drivers there is a
TVOUT_README somewhere under /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA...

Hi, all!
I am thinking about buying an agenda PDA, it looks a really beautyful
toy, and supported by a good community of developers, but...
1) Agenda site states it has 16M Ram + 16M Flash Rom, more than one guy
told me it only has 8+16...
2) I can't find my country (italy) on the registration page during the
buying process...
3) I Wrote to the customer service but i can't get an answer...
... it doesn't look to me so serious!!
Anyone here having some experience with them?? And with the PDA??

Huh? I always thought that X was so that you could connect two big
monitors and open 12 xterms, gvims, etc. at once? And for reading a.b.p.*?
Sheesh.

So, apparently you should have /etc/X11/X symlinked to XF86_XVGA, and in
/etx/X11/XF86Config in the screen section you should have the driver as
"s3_savage".
If this doesn't help, what does your XF86Config file look like (in
particular, the Screen and Device sections)?

Well, the fix to turn of DMA was put in because the hardware bug caused
data corruption. RedHat decided that turning off DMA slows down the
machine, but at least your data is intact.

The PVR doesn't work with the bttv drivers becuase its based on a different
chip then the other WinTV boards from Hauppauge.
I am waiting for the bttv driver to be updated to include support for the
kfir1 chip too .Also there is a project in sourgeforce that is building the
driver. http://sourceforge.net/projects/pvr/
If any body else has more info I would like to here about it. I may just end
up going with a ATI card or Realmagic card if this Hauppauge card don't work
out.

If you're running a stock RedHat install, you should probably get the
entire 2.4.5 tarball. RedHat's 2.4.2 kernel is not the official 2.4.2
kernel, which makes patching the kernel impossible with the official
kernel patches.

Single-user mode is when you start the system with "linux single" at the
boot prompt, or when you enter "init S" as root. Just about every
process shuts down, only root can log in (and only from one virtual
console), and the system is in a very limited state. This mode is
useful for doing certain things, like rescuing severely br0ken
filesystems.
A rescue system is a completely separate system, usually on floppy or
CD-ROM. It is usually a minimal system, containing only the tools you
need to repair a system that won't boot. Tom's RootBoot is one of the
best rescue systems for x86; it fits a ton of useful commands on one
floppy. However, there are some things that even Tom's can't handle, so
there's the Linuxcare Bootable Business Card, which contains 100M of
utilities in 40M of CD-ROM space.
I haven't heard good things about RedHat's "rescue" mode.

How do I get the wheel in my PS/2 Logitech compatible mouse to work ?
RedHat 7.x - Fresh out of the box (original RedHat CDs).
Gnome - I am not sure of the version (again, out of the box)
I am new to Linux but not new to UNIX.
Browsing through newsgroups I've seen tons of advices on the subject,

All of them assumed knowledge I don't have.
Can someone please provide/point-to one simple explanation ?

It probably works fine. You maybe want to know how to get X to generate
events corresponding to its use, and how to get applications to take
notice of those events.
> RedHat 7.x - Fresh out of the box (original RedHat CDs).
I think 7.1 has it all set up for you (I don't use RH). 7.0 doesn't
(I think).

And what is it?

no!
"All you have to do" is set the correct mouse type in X (which version?
it matters) and then edit a few of the defaults in the app-defaults
files, and add a bit to your XF86Config. Then restart X.
If it helps you, the following are possible additions to the pointer
section of your XF86Config:
Protocol "MouseManPlusPS/2" # for ps/2 wheel mouse
or
Protocol "IMPS/2" # for ps/2 wheel mouse
and
ZAxisMapping 4 5
Alternatively/and you could try running imwheel.
And I have various mods in my .Xdefaults, such as
Netscape*globalNonTextTranslations: #override\n\
Shift<Btn4Down>: LineUp()\n\
Shift<Btn5Down>: LineDown()\n\
None<Btn4Down>:LineUp()LineUp()LineUp()LineUp()LineUp()LineUp()\n\
None<Btn5Down>:LineDown()LineDown()LineDown()LineDown()LineDown()LineDown()\n\
Alt<Btn4Down>: xfeDoCommand(forward)\n\
Alt<Btn5Down>: xfeDoCommand(back)\n
But I don't use the wheel for anything. I find it too hard to grip.

The system diagnostic reports a seek error that is repeatable. Then it
recommends a backup of user data and a surface scan. I have a couple of
questions concerning this:
How would I backup this user data? It is a firewall and other then
configuration there is no data I would loose. Obviously it would be
nice if I could simply recover. But the configuration was straight
forward, so rebuilding doesn't sound to bad.
If I do this surface analysis it will destroy the data? .... never mind
it says it will. I guess this is the equivilent to a reformat?
I'm under the impression that it is possible to build a diskless
firewall. I would prefer to do this, since it seems like I would then
not risk the drive failure problem I have now. How hard is this? What
are the drawbacks?
Finally, this is a very old disk (if you can guage age by size it's 1.2
gig), and I would assume more prone to failure. Should I shell out the
cash for a new hard drive, if the whole purpose is a firewall. I assume
I would have to purchase an 10-30 Gig harddrive and then hardware
program it to only use 2 Gig because of the very old bios on this
machine. Is there a better, cheaper way?
I've included comp.os.linux.security for the discussion of the diskless
firewall.
Thanks,
Mojo

I have two systems with the chipset and saw this behavior on 2.4.4 initially
with them. I have a K7pro-2a and a K7t which both have the via +
southbridge issues. Definitely, moving to 2.4.5 works and you get the
latest driver without having to slipstream it in. I don't know how
difficult it is to patch a redhat supplied kernel. Perhaps an easier method
would be to just download the tarvall and compile it.
BTW, we had an interesting thread on all this stuff on comp.os.linux.setup
awhile back and since I am affected twice over, I am particularly interested
in finding out information now on this.
The move to 2.4.5 has worked quite well for me with the VIA ide drivers.
