To each their own. I tend to prefer emacs myself, but I will help you anyway

(Std. disclaimer -- I work on GCC, and not Linux, so everything I say about
Linux is IMHO).

I suspect that Red Hat 6.1 is simply too old of a release to support your video
card. The XFree86 web site says that 3.3.6, 4.03, and 4.10 all support the
Savage 2000 chipset, using the SVGA driver under 3.3.6 and the savage driver
under 4.03/4.10. So at a bare minimum, upgrade your system to Red Hat 6.2,
which includes XFree86 version 3.3.6. If you are upgrading, it might make
sense to go to the current revision (7.1). Don't forget to download and apply
the security updates that were made after the releases were shipped,
particularly 6.2.

If you still would prefer console mode, you can make the text use more rows and
columns by using the framebuffer mode (assuming the video card is VESA 2.0
compliant). You should be able to find the directions in the Framebuffer-HOWTO
in a recent version of the HOWTOs. On the Tecra 8000 laptop I'm posting from
for instance, framebuffer mode gives 48 lines and 128 columns for a 1024x768
display. One downside of framebuffer mode is that scrolling tends to be
slower.

The USB device number is a random number, there's no guarantee that it stays the
same. It is only important for the USB drivers, but not for anything above that.
But the device (/dev/usblp0) is always the same if this is your only printer. I
can't see why SAMBA should need anything else.

OK, I admit that I haven't actually tried each and every Linux
distribution for the 68k and ppc processors, but from whatt I've
read/seen/attempted, *some* part of a MacOS installation is still
required. I'm not interested in dual-booting between MacOS and
Linux, I just want Linux! :) To spare me the agony of trying
each and every distribution (installing then deleting the MacOS
debris), are there any distributions that more closely follow the
x86 installation process, as in with boot diskettes?

I've got several older Macs lying around, from an LCII (68030)
to a 7300/200 (604). I've not tried MacOS/X yet (it won't run
on these platforms anyway ... THANKS AQUA!), but it should
be clear that MacOS9 is at least as crufty as the MS garbage.

Hi all. I'm writing because I've a big problem with Lilo when I trying to

My configuration is:

Athlon 1200

Raid hardware is NOT active.

I've installed Linux on the 2 master disk (hdg) with a boot partition

Lilo on the mbr (w98 disk) with this configuration:

I've been very happy with an Okidata Okipage 10e. I've had it
for a year now, attached to a Red Hat 6.0 machine that serves as
a file a print server for my little home network. Linux treats
it as an HP LJ 4/5/6. Cost was around $300 from buy.com.

I think the current model is the 14e, though, which prints a bit
faster, but the price is about the same. The Oki came standard
with 4 MB of ram, upgradable to 36 MB. The other popular
choice, though I don't know why, is the Brother HL-1240, which
has only 2 MB of ram and is not expandable. Probably a cost
issue, as I think the Brother is a bit cheaper than the Oki. We
have one of these at work, and it seems okay, but I think we
occasionally over run the 2 MB memory with graphic-intensive
pages.

Nevertheless, both offer an honest-to-god paper tray instead of
a top feed slot, which seems to be more reliable.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

After finally putting a mad old Epson 1520 to sleep we're getting a new
bubblejet. The Lexmark Z52 looked good on paper (pun ;0) and it also had
dedicated linux drivers for it.

Unfortunately they are (or at least last time I looked) for parallel only
and I'd really like this to be using USB. Parallel would suffice but I
really don't trust our 2nd parallel port.

Has anyone managed to get this printer working through USB without too much
jiggery pokery?

Anything generic would be great, SuSE specific would be better.

Cheers,

To be honest, you can sort of mount audio CDs (with cdfs and it's

You have plenty of room to move with that kind of hardware.
I have a server running PIII 550 with 256MB SDRam, 30GB Hard drive. Runs 27
web sites, a few of those use the MySQL database that runs on the same
machine. Has been up for 105 days without a glitch.

Hi,

using Debian woody and kernel 2.4.5 on a Duron 750 @950 on an Abit kt7a
I get exactly the same.

Selecting Athlon/duron on compiling the kernel gives me a kernel panic

Hello,

I have a problem with a DELL precision 420 running a 6.0 R.H. :
When I add a new disk on my SCSI channel (simply plugging it...), the BIOS
acknowledges it, but it seems like Linux has something against it : I get a message
like
"SCSI bus is being reseted for host channel 0"
"SCSI host 0 channel0 reset (pid 15) timed out - trying harder".
I don't think the new hard drive is to be suspected, since I tried with two different
ones and the bios shows it...

Is there something I missed in my configuration?

Thanks in advance.

If you are using win95 then I think this has a maximum limit of 64 mb that
it can see,

you should also try going into bios to see if the bios sees all of it, then
save.

I've been using a KT7-RAID for a few months now, and haven't seen a
