Hmm - I'm sorry I can't offer you readymade solutions, just hints and
links :
a) I remember having seen a project for at least reading MS Tape Format
(MTF)
tapes. That's the format NT Backup uses. That was maybe some 1.5
years ago,
and the SW was at an alpha state then. IIRC that was somewhere below
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/system/backup; the name was something with
"MTF",
I believe. Search there, at google or sourceforge, please.
b) Using tar from UNIX(like) to UNIX(like) systems, it *is* possible to
use remote tape drives via /etc/rmt. The syntax is like (e.g. backup)
:
"tar cvf remote_machine:/dev/tape_device /" (substitute the hostname
and the appropriate device name on the remote tape "server".
Thus, this could be possible with a tar port supporting this.
Now, I do know at least 3 tar ports for the various MS Win systems.
2 of these support _local_ SCSI tapes, no remote support IIRC.
Another one was built assuming the tape drive is on a remote *NIX
system - BUT that was a stone-age old 16-bit app designed for Win
3.x,
with a very simple GUI and just supporting _8+3_ filenames :-((.
The name was some like "WinTar"; I think I saw it on some old
CICA mirror CD.
Let's hope someone resumed that work as a Win32 app...
Just my $.02

Forgive my ignorance, but why would unmasking interrupts make any
difference when disk transfers are performed using DMA???

Subject: any Iomega ZIP USB users?

hi
i'm considering buying an external Iomega Zip 100 USB drive to use with
my laptop (toshiba sat pro 4340) which has an Intel 82371AB PIIX4 USB
controller and running linux 2.4.3.
i've looked at
http://www.linux-usb.org (this list the mass storage drv in the
kernel as experimental?)
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices
http://www.iomega.com/software/linuxtools.html
and they seem to indicate that the Iomega zip 100 USB does work,
although there is mixed reports about the drivers that are availbel for
this device - the kernel ubs_storage.o and the iomega provided utils
(for 2.4.0pre).
also, i have heard/read somewhere that different versions of the zip100
use different protocols, and wondered if this would be a problem when
using the kernel driver (which i would prefer to use)
if anyone could give me any hints on their current working
configurations; part numbers from the devices/kernel output would also
be useful.
thanks for any info

Thanks for your help. I had heard that the onboard video had some problems
with Redhat 7.0, but maybe that was fixed with 7.1. That would stand to
reason, since the 815e is a popular chipset.

My own experience with USB is that it doesn't work very well yet. It
hogs CPU resources. I have one box with a ZIP100 and another with a
Zip100. Both are parallel port devices. If I were to purchase
another Zip drive I would make in a SCSI device. In fact, I would
make all my peripherals and HDs SCSI.

Deleting partition tables and master boot record from hard drive.
Maybe I am phrasing this incorrectly but I want to get rid of all partition
tables and boot records on a 10 GIG Western Digital hard drive. I created a
mess when I installed Linux and Windows98 on this drive and would like to
get it back to the way it was when I first bought it......or close to it!
I have used Partition Magic 5.0 and it doesn't help much.
Is there a Linux program that takes care of such problems?
Any help is appreciated. Posted here or sent to my e-mail.

Subject: SBLive stopped working after crash!
Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 15:20:29 +0200
Hello!
I have a problem.
My computer crashed some time ago, and when I started it again the BIOS
said "CMOS checksum error - changed to default". I suppose this means
that it reset all BIOS options to the default values. I booted Linux,
and I couldn't play any sound! I'm using Mandrake 8.0, so I opened
DrakConf and looked at the hardware settings. I now had _two_ soundcards
registered, my SBLive and another called VIA something.
I assumed that the VIA soundcard was the built-in soundcard on my
motherboard, which had been turned back on when the BIOS settings went
back to default. So I rebooted and disabled the built-in soundcard in
the BIOS. When I booted Linux again, it said that some hardware had been
removed and asked if I wanted to remove the configurations for that
hardware. I answered "Yes".
When I open DrakConf or run 'detect' now, there is only one soundcard -
the SBLive. But I still can't play sound. I am running Gnome and have a
small sound configuration applet in the panel that is supposed to bring
up the mixer for the soundcard, but when I try to use it it says
"Couldn't open mixer, make sure that you have sound support compiled
into the kernel" or something similar. I still have the devices "mixer",
"audio", "sequencer" and "dsp" in my /dev directory.
I thought that I could fix this problem simply by removing the
configurations for SBLive and reboot Linux, to re-detect the soundcard
and add new (working) settings, but I haven't found a way to remove
hardware configurations. Does anyone know how to do that, or know any
better way to solve this problem?

Download the RESQ utilities from http://resq.co.il/resq.php, and extract the lot
to a boot floppy, preferably with Win 98 system files.
Boot of the floppy, then run RESQDISK /KILL.
The drive is now in virgin state. FDISK, format, and load your applications.

How did it look when you bought it? If you want to install Linux on it,
you could simply boot from the install floppy and run the installation
program (if you have one). I know that Mandrake's installer includes a
tool that allows you to repartition the hard drive. I think you can use
it to create FAT partitions too, if you want to install Windows
afterwards.

Actually this is something that is looking likely - I eventually got
linux installed - but by installing RH 7.1 via HTTP via the internet,
I think it worked as it was slower with less IDE activity - less chance
of whatever race condition or hang was happening. I realised my
previous problems were RH update2 program going into
uninterruptable IO wait (ps shows D).
I got setup partition installed and windows 98 and now linux
(I don't need windows, just wanted to test another OS) - but
I do see kupdated crashing and going into a zombie state on
linux sometimes (last time I saw this replacing RAM fixed
the problem) - but I don't have any of this wide RAM simms
to replace this time. Also Windows ran fine yesterday now show
'protection error' - so really points to RAM problem.
HOWEVER compaq diagnostics shows no problem on the RAM -
hangs on CDROM however - I don't know I'm all out of ideas -
best guess is the RAM.
Thanks for all who helped,

Well, while it is not a cheap modem, my personal recomendation is an
external USR/3Com Courrier V.everything modem. They are workhorses,
work with every OS I have tried (and I have tried a lot) and work
virtually forever. The ISPs I have worked at swore by them for their
dialup pools, and if a business like an ISP that depends on modems
working for keeping customers will only use a $250 modem, then that
works for me as well. Have been using mine for a couple of years now
with no problems, and way better connection speeds than I was getting
with the cheapo internal modems I was using before that kept dyining
on me.
