This is almost certainly be a mismatch between the version of gpm installed
and the version of gpm mc was compiled against. Try recompiling mc 4.5.33,
or download mc from:
ftp://ftp.inconnect.com/pub/unix/linux/redhat-6.0/contrib-updates/
which has lots of update Gnome RPMS (not the latest, but better than the
official ones.)
