I havn't tried this, and I don't know id it will work at all, but you can
get semy wysiwyg (it just gives you a better idea of what you typed). If
x-symbol works with mule (I don't know) and if you can find out how to
disable charachter replacement (for charachters with ascii code higher
then 127) you can get some of what you want.
