I guess it isn't a winmodem since minicom seems to get along it fine.
What about permissions problem?
Since he is having problems, perhaps trying command line tools is a better 
approach? I would also try to consult the PPP-HOWTO.

Just out of curiosity: what distro is your friend using?
BTW: I think that everybody who post technical difficulties to the list should 
mention the disrto in question. Perhaps this is a step towards Maddog linux 
standardization?
