With my Debian/potato, first thing I would do is to look and perhaps change
/etc/X11/XF86Config:

[21:46:40 /tmp]$ grep Default /etc/X11/XF86Config -B5 -A5

Section "Screen"
        Driver "svga"
        Device "Alpine"
        Monitor "MAG DX1495"
        DefaultColorDepth 16
        StandbyTime 2
        SuspendTime 3
        OffTime 4
        Subsection "Display"
                Depth 8
[21:46:52 /tmp]$

> How do I know how many colors the display uses btw?

There are probably many ways:

[21:47:49 /tmp]$ xwininfo

          mouse in that window.

You can try man X (1).
