lightweight Directory Access protocol, the standard replacing NIS and
other services on the net today. Novell's NDS has an LDAP API and so
will any other directory service in the forseeable future. go see
openldap.org for more.
btw, most Email search engines (whowhere, four11) support it, so you may
notice it becoming an integral part of Email clients, for looking up
addresses.
