(which is probably what you'll use on Linux):

Please note that almost any modern drive (being mmc compliant) should
work, both in the ATAPI and SCSI versions.
I would certainly take a bet on the HP you mentioned working.

On a more personal note, I use a Smart&Friendly internal ATAPI
(x24x4x4), and it works fine.
