Desclaimer : I didn't work with it too much , but from my experience:
There are graphical frontend to the debugger : I used 1 of them kdbg , which
is part of Kdevelop IDE (can also work standalone)
there are other simular programs , check freshmeat
Another IDE i saw is called CodeCrusaider and there is a debugger front
CodeMedic that goes with it.
CVS
has a binary mode which can help you with what you need (I gether that you
are looking for something simular to MS SourceSafe , only safer :))
