Boot in single mode seems in place.
What was the exact report? If 8139 did not work you might try higher 16385 ( =
2 * 8192 + 1) or 32769 ( = 2 * 16384 + 1). In any case, man e2fsck and
e2fsprogs can help you much more then I am.
