Aharon,
The best advice I can give you is to use a normal tarball file (something
like linux-2.4.3.tar.bz2), with the following simple steps
1. download the 2.4.3 file (the .bz2 file - it's shorter)
2. become a root
3. go to /usr/src
4. mv linux linux.old
5. tar -Ixvf ~<your-normal-user>/linux-2.4.3.tar.bz2
6. mv linux linux-2.4.3
7. ln -s linux-2.4.3 linux
8. cd linux
9. make xconfig
config it, compile it, do whatever it needs ;)
