ObRuling: the question is not Linux-related, because the problem is
described as affecting both Windows 98 and Linux. The question is
probably hardware-related. So it is not on-topic for the Linux-IL mailing
list.
However: the guy did try to RTFM. The guy included as much detail about
his system as humanly possible. Linux might have tools (like hdparm)
which would have helped him diagnose his hardware problem.
Therefore, anyone who knows about Linux tools for testing hardware -
please speak up and help him and enrich our general knowledge level.
