(BTW: I suggest you put in Times New Roman as well, as it looks much
better printed. But we'll worry about that later)

iw is the old two-letter code (ISO-639?) for Hebrew. "Naturally" it means
IWrit (Ivrit). "he" is the newer one (in the newer version of the same
standard)

Have you tried to remove this font from the fonts.dir of the fonts in the
original AbiWord directory?

It should have also created Type1 fonts of those TTFs.

Do you have locales-he installed?

I managed to get it working for me (I only set LANG, IIRC). I'm not
exactly sure what exactly I had to do to the fonts directory to make this
work.
