yes, gnome and kde are going to be ported. But I have been looking for that moment for a long time, here is what I think:
kde guys do the massive update all together, which is nice for high versions, but for low versions I like the gnome policy of: update when you please, what way you can update some programs while leaving older programs (less to d/l). This is a problem with, high versions changes, in which you need all your working software to be updated as well. In kde, the guys do supply most of our needs. Gnome, is more flexible, and while most of the programs available for gnome, are "gnome" programs, they are not developed directly by gnome. Among those programs are: xmms (i did not see any comment on gtk2 on the main page), xchat (the 2 is in progress), abiword (soon to reach v1 in gtk1. gtk2 in two years or so...). when kde updates from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1m you will need to update qt, kdelibs, kdebase, and what not... notice that kdebase-nsplugins, did not change a lot since 2.0, but an update is needed, and this is only a small example. kde3 port is easly done, but I not know the status of gnome2/gtk2 porting, is it hard? there are many 3rd party application which use gtk (it is one of the best lgpl toolkits available), and would like to know it they will be ported to gtk 2 (linuxconf for example), and the reason why redhat and mandrake did not include gtk2/gnome2 in theire distributions is that both of those distributions use gtk for configuration of the desktop, and this will lead to problems. A gtk2 version is a higher version update (rh 8.0, mdk 9.0). This is MHO. - diego -- Microsoft's biggest and most dangerous contribution to the software industry may be the degree to which it has lowered user expectations. ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
