Look, I really did not want to get bogged down in a flame
war like the ones that (saddly) errupted here and there on this list.
BUT, Schildt sold about 2M books on his titles "The
Complete Reference
on C" and later C++. In my opinion that more than anything speaks about
their quality (remember the saying about the number of people and duration
of time
one can fool?) .
As a quick reference and elementary/medium level learning- the
money is well spent . The third edition includes some good intruductory
STL stuff.
Don't know about the one you cited (""C++ From The Ground Up").
Anyway, there are a lot of other good books and this issue is realy
not suitable
for this list.

among professionals. I have stayed away for years. Unless someone says
that the quality has markedly improved in recent years, I suggest you
do, too.Check out ACCU reviews. E.g. here is what Francis Glassborow has to say in

There is a list of ACCU reviews of Schildt's books on that page.
Check out how many are marked "Not Recommended".If you are not convinced, I still have Schildt's "C++ From The Ground
Up" taking up space on my shelf (got it what I was young and
ignorant). I tried to get rid of it, but no one wanted it. If you do,
I'll let you have it for a token sum of 5 agorot (the smallest coin of
the realm), and that's just to make sure you are willing to pay for it
and not just want a complete freebie.--
