Not amazing at all (check out the Cerfcube for something really amazing:
http://www.intrinsyc.com/products/referencedesigns/cerfcube.asp) and not
installing headers and libs is a very logical and sane decision to do
when one is designing an embedded Linux based os for a 'hublike
appliance-thingie with a flash thingamabob', or an embedded platform as
it is called in the trade.

There's a good chance that what you got there is their embedded
distribution. Go search for 'embedded' or RH's site.
