Hi all, This email is aimed at the Hebrew and Arabic speaking Linux users, who still have Windows only programs that pull them back from switching over completely.
Some time ago I have started working on bidirectional text rendering for WINE. I have now submitted the first patch with EXTREMELY preliminary support. To emphasize just how extremely preliminary, wer'e talking about only text output, and only reordering continous runs. This is not for the feign of heart. I promise another announcment when the time comes. So, what do I want from you, you ask? I need your help. If you can program, great. If not, you can still be of a great assitance by focusing my work on the most pressing issues. If you have Hebrew programs and you want them to work, send me a list of the programs. If you feel brave enough to download the latest nightly build (available from http://www.winehq.com/download/ - RPMs, Debs, sources, and what not), my patch should be included in tommorow's build. Install it, try running it, and let me know what works and what doesn't yet. This will help me focus my efforts in the things that will get most programs working in the minimal amount of time. Also, if anyone in Israel has a copy of a book titled "The Unicode Standard, version 1.0", ISBN 0201567881 (the version number is extremely important. 2.0 MAY be ok, but 3.0 is defenitely not), I would love to buy or lend it. It is a 1992 book, and b&n have it for 44$, ships within 2-3 weeks (i.e. - not acceptable). Amazon.uk offer it for even more (33 pounds). I am sure there are people here that worked in places that wanted to internationalize code back in the early 90's, and bought that book. So, to summarize. Program lists, status reports, a book. This is your chance to do something for an important opensource project without having to write a single line of code yourself.
