Warning: MPEG-4 is patent encumbered. If we want any foothold in the
multimedia arena, it is important to try and kill those beasts before
they grow up.

I would look into open variants of DivX and (with some caution)
on the promised (open-source) RealNetworks encoders (if and when
they are actually released).
