Not that I know of. They were working with Alan Cox about integrating their 
driver to the ac tree and then to the 2.4.x official tree.

Sort of. Lets say that Adaptec won't loose money because of Promise ;)

Really depends on the workload and other factors, but hardware raid is almost 
always better and faster. If you want good IDE hardware raid - go with 3ware.
